Title: 112 vs. True Temper 112D
Post by: elcarlstono on December 10, 2024, 02:22:43 PM
Anybody able to comment on the differences between these 2 reels? Looking at a True Temper 112D on ebay as a possible parts source for my old OC 112.  Specifically need a new spool and hoping to make some drag updates.  Thanks.

it would be totally different.  i doubt that any parts, even frame parts, could be switched out.

Interesting.  They look very similar. Mainly I was interested in that spool which I understand is more mono friendly.

a black anodized aluminum spool is probably the best way to go.

Are those easily available for the OC 112?  I've never seen or heard of one.

Alan, when I first read the post in my head I saw "Penn 112" vs "true temper 112D" it wasn't until a few moments later I realized he was talking about a true temper 112. OP wrote what he meant. I misinterpreted .

Now, I'm a moron. And I hesitate to assume anyone else makes the same interpretive mistakes I do. But there's a part of me that thinks there might be more folks reading it the same way.

I figured that out after the first reply and have made some clarifying edits(keeping in mind we are on the OC board)

Picture probably would have helped

I don't know for sure, but suspect that after the sale to True Temper there were no changes except the badge.  It was an excellent product and there was no need to make changes.  OC failed, not because they were poor engineers, but because they were poor businessmen.

If it's not too expensive on the used market then go for it.  If you can get this question in front of Mike C. he might be able to say for sure..

Does that model have drag washers. Some were metal to metal.

The 112 and the 112d is the same ,only difference is the waffle spool .

The hole pattern on the side plates for the frames might be different. I tried changing a frame for my father's 112 and the parts are not the same.

The fluted, or waffle spool is a part that's on the OC 922 I have(thank you Leonardo!). Darned if I can recall the details in the advertisement I read, but they said it was a special improvement feature. Wonder why?

Edit: looked it up: "Fluted  marine Aluminum Spool, an exclusive stronger construction, which gives greater resistance to line pressure, is designed for monofilament ".
Aluminum? Looks like chromed brass or stainless steel to me.
Checked it with a magnet, interesting, the arbor is magnetic, but the flanges are not... strange. Where they intersect it looks to be all one piece...? Checked all metal exterior parts, nothing magnetic, only that arbor.

Maybe the magnet is picking up the spool shaft inside the arbor

I would think the same.

I don't know but wouldn't be too surprised if the arbor is steel.  The aluminum reduces weight and inertia.  But, arbor inertia would be about the same for steel or aluminum because it's at the center.

Prolly the shaft. When I first saw the fluting I thought "spool drainage?". The reel's a '56 so maybe mono-stretch damage was getting more common by then.
Noticed I don't see any True Temper versions with the counter-weight handle wrench, did they give that up, to cheapen the cost?
