Title: dog conversion from leaf spring to coil spring in old 140 squidder?
Post by: Scottfarkus on January 01, 2025, 03:56:10 PM
Hi all, this is kind of a continuation of my older post relating to the cleaning and refurbishing a late 40s squidder. I got a new dog and spring from Mystic with the intention of replacing the old leaf spring anti-reverse dog setup with the newer and more conventional coil spring setup. It became clear to me when I got the new dog and spring that the conversion was not going to be that simple.

I went back to the old leaf spring and was able to (after about an hour of frustration with my big fingers and old eyes) reinstall the old leaf spring and complete the assembly of the business endcap. I am now wondering if anyone who has successfully done this conversion can enlighten me to the procedure so that I can complete it at a later cleaning. Thanks up front!

Scott, I would examine the double dog threads.  Some (dogs) have been added with a coil spring which necessitates channeling a groove into the side plates.  Others have used leaf springs.  Bill

Bill, thanks for the advice. I will do that.

Once you figure it out the flat springs are easy to install and they work well.  I would not change them.

Keta, you are absolutely right. I've been having some problems on reassembly so I've taken the reel apart and reassembled several times and I've gotten pretty good at the leaf spring install. I'll need to find a source for another leaf spring cause I don't know how much life this one has in it.

The flat springs are Penn part # 14-155. Mystic has them in stock but a limited amount.

You can find them here,

If you change your windshield wipers, there is a stainless steel strip in it.  A few minutes on a belt sander will grind it down to usable dimensions.
