Title: 612 Ocean city Restore
Post by: oldmanjoe on February 14, 2025, 06:34:31 AM
I pick up a project reel . Thanks again Randy.    It was missing some parts and needed a good cleaning .

I just started using a Ultrasonic cleaner and was not thrilled with it`s performance , so I order another one , so happens the second one shows up the same day the reel shows up .
Great now I can do a side by side test with the cleaners .

Disassembled the reel and drop parts in both cleaners .   The second cleaner works much better !

After cleaning parts ,laid them to dry .

The clicker switch was missing , as was the shift lever .  So I need to make these parts .  A stainless steel bolt and a butter knife was looking good , but I did find a some stainless steel flat stock .

Some ruff fitting and marking to get the final contour .

Then the final fittings of parts assembly

The bars were clean up and ran a tap to clean the insides .

All the parts got a buffing  ,than recleaned .  The reel foot and handle parts were shot with clear lacquer spray to keep down the future corrosion .  If they were real bad ,I would have painted them.    Typical assembly grease every thing .

Joe,
Is that a German silver spool?  How did you clean / polish it?
It looks great.

Or "Joe Six-pack". If I lived near you, I'd ask if you could use an assistant that wants to learn.

No it`s chrome over brass , but heavy chrome  .    I scrape the heavy salt deposits with a knife , than soak in water .  Followed up with another knife scraping and water soak .  I then rub on it with a 3m doubbie pad .  Now I will put it in white vinegar for a 3-5 minute bath .

It may seam the long way to do it , but if I go straight to a vinegar bath I feel that I loose a lot of chrome  .  Some spools will not come back , so I paint them ..

First 2 pictures are the 612 spool .    The other pictures are of a 606 spool that did not do well , heavy loss of chrome ,hence the paint job .

Great job Joe, only one question, to muck grease around the drag dog, could restrict it from pivoting, maybe a light oil in that area, thanks for posting, cheers Don.
