I have some fiber-glass blank ,these are unfinish blank and want to paint brighter color for grandkids .What paint should I use and what kind of coating ?
If you want a glossy semi factory finish get some CPxtra from voodoo rods. Never used paint so couldn't tell you about that
I'm no expert but I just finished an old solid fiberglass Cyclone rod about a week ago. I used some inexpensive white spray paint since the original color on the rod was white. I sprayed on 2 coats of white. After placing all the guides, I brushed on a fairly heavy coat of Flex Coat on the entire rod blank and guide wraps. The next day I put a second coat of Flex Coat on the guide wraps. Fished it this past Sunday and it looks fine. I guess time will tell.
Thank you I will use plastic spray can then 2 coat of flex coat ,may not last long but just for kid rod, it's OK
I use Rust-Oleum Paints . Paint & Primer in one is very good . Key is to keep light coats multiple coats . Let it dry for a week before you wrap guides on , or you may see the thread sink into the paint !!
Ready to paint and put them together .The top rod (casting rod ) made out from top part of 2 pieces rod that lost the bottom part .this for my youngest grandson that always hold spinning rod with reel on top .
the second is spinning made out of fiberglass blank and only use 45" top part of blank .Handle made out of wine cord with smallest Fuji seat seat
The third made out of 6' fiberglass blank with handle from BFS rod
I had been wanting to paint some old blanks, but hesitated. How can you paint without the paint peeling off when the blank flexs? Well, I took the plunge last year with an old Zebco "Sundowner" rod that had more nicks and scrapes than a kid after his first shave. Used Rustoleum "London Grey" in a spray can. All guides were removed. Very thin coats, and after final coat, let everything sit for a week. Then, wrapped new guides on. Happy with the result; however it works, the paint does not crack or wrinkle with the rod under load.

I've had great and flexible results using a thin layer of flex coat rod epoxy with a dab of acrylic paint mixed in. Bent the heck out of the rods, including one noodle that happily goes to 180°, with zero issue. A thicker coat is more scratch resistant but probably more prone to issues from over flexing.
Well I think I only use Flex coat with out paint ,hope it will be more flex and much quicker to finish
Krylon Fusion spray paint is what I have used in the past. 25 years later it's still looks good
Been fishing, got top soil and stone for my wife project ,have sometime today to paint the old blank .mostly fiberglass blank for grandkids rods .Try to find color that match Fenwick brown color but none are match
Looking good!
Just put the handle on one small rod 4 1/2 ' long ,do the butt wrap print out label .Need to wrap guides ,and wait for tip top ordering
Off topic QT,what is the blue reel? The rods look great!
The blue reel is crappie reel ,can't cast with it only to store line for long crappie rod
Finish another kid rod .A lots more to go
Looks great nice job man,,,, ;)
Some rod may bring bad luck and some rod bring good luck .I think Fenwick rod always bring good luck .This is first time I try to wrap a little fancy butt wrap ,try to make it look like Fenwick .Not sure what material they use ,I found a baking cork look alike .just a little more red .Is this look like Fenwick yet ?
Look at gudebrod wraps I believe that's what they used.
Most of fiberglass blank already finish ,few more I need more guides to finish .All rods on this rack have been done lately
After try many different paint I found that Rust-Oleum Ultra cover paint + primer work best ,let's it dry for 2 days then use Gorilla clear glue , use only 2 drops to coat the whole rod . Drop 2 drops on a microfiber tower then wipe on the blank , it will create a thin coating layer like Polycrylic without any brush mark .Can also use this to coat old rod to make it look new
Interesting coating. How does it do with sunlight?
