Title: 1940 French Rudipech Lasso spin reel/ strip, refresh, restore. Completed!
Post by: Woodbilly on April 01, 2025, 02:24:38 PM
You know it!

Back again with another rare and unique spin reel!

This time, it's a 1940's French Lasso reel by Rudipech

It is very similar to my 1940 Croizix le soie, so I'm dating it by this, as there is basically zero information about this reel online.

I have only seen one other online for sale and at the time, I sadly let it pass.
Ever since, I've been on the hunt. Finally got that old girl!

I love the weird and unusual reels and this one has been on my list, since I lost out on the first one that caught my eye.

Overall, it is in fine shape.

Minimal paint loss and tarnished brass brightwork.

All mechanical function was fine and a/r was fully working.

Bakelite spool and drag knob perfect, but dirty.

Side plate is nice and crisp with no script loss.

Great looking wood handle knob with fantastic patina.

I gave this a complete strip to clean the old nasty grease and just to see its workings.

Some aspects could not be disassembled.

The eccentric wheel mounting block and its pivot shaft are held fast via a threaded stud with a filed smooth nut holding it.
This stud also acts as the bail trip lever when it contacts the half moon aluminum shroud attached to body shell.

Shined all brass brightwork, line roller escutions, and galvanized cover plate screws and nuts.

I also flipped these cover plate screws, so the slot heads were on the badge side instead of the nuts.
Just looked better to me aestically.

This is a very unique reel, to say the least.

It appears to wind the line on the spool, of course, by the lasso/ line roller rotation, but also uses a splined collar affixed to the non rotating shaft end, that mates with a toothed wheel on the flier assembly, when bail is closed, to "walk" the articulated bail arm up and down when wheel rotates around the splined collar, as handle turns the flier.

The toothed wheel has a offset fastening hole that makes the wheel rotate asymmetrically as it spins around the splined collar, as flier rotates.

This offset rotation of the wheel when meshed with the splined collar, makes it tilt as it rotates causing it to "walk" up and down the collar during retrieval, thus allowing vertical line lay on spool.

Craziest thing I have ever seen in a reel!

Sealed drag washer set up and stamped copper drag click spring.
Let me say this, with the copper click washer against the Bakelite spool, it creates the most unique drag click I have ever heard.

Another unique part is the anti reverse set up.

It is a stamped aluminum plate with spring affixed and switch arm fastened with machine screw.
The switch arm has a tab stamped on it, that contacts a toothed gear fixed to handle drive gear.
When switch is activated, the spring holds it in place and allows it to click with the mated gear teeth.
Only style like this I have ever seen.

Another Lasso specific part is the brass collar on handle shaft, that rotates to expose an oil port hole on the handle shaft.
Add oil and rotate collar to cover port hole.
 Tricky!!

This old French girl is one of the weirdest, simplest,  and overengineered reels I have come across and I love it!

Gonna get spooled with 6lb test and put into action on some feisty crappie.

Peace!

Cool & unique old spinning reel! 👍 The French shelled out a lot of interesting spinning reel designs back in that era. 😀

Very unusual for sure. One of the oddest I've seen.
Right up there with my Croizix le soie.

Glad you enjoy! I love these old girls and love to show them in detail for others who may not have seen them or heard of em.
