What do you think about this Product? Does it really work to protect our tackle boxes?
The US company Flambeau has been marketing some interesting capsules for fighting humidity and rust for a few years. Zerust has proven to be the best solution ever to protect your equipment from rust and corrosion. Molded directly into plastic, this patented polymer emits a harmless vapor, forming a protective layer around metal surfaces. All Zerust products will remain effective for three to five years or more, so you can count on long-lasting, worry-free protection. Zerust capsules are perfect for tool boxes, pistol cases, rifle cases, truck boxes, ammo boxes, tool boxes, etc. What is Zerust? A unique Flambeau VCI polymer technology, molded directly into specific Flambeau plastics, that provides years of worry-free, long-lasting rust and corrosion protection. How does Zerust work? Plastics treated with Zerust emit an odorless, harmless vapor in a limited area, naturally forming a protective layer around exposed, cleaned metal surfaces, preventing oxidation and blocking rust and corrosion.
I don't like the idea of a tackle box emitting vapors. Wonder what it does to plastic worms.
Interesting...the capsules might be good for tool boxes, especially with the high humidity in FL. Not sure I'd want it in my tackle box though.
If it attracts the fish to my lures —- I'm all for it!
Best, Fred
"no, seriously guys, these are good VOCs!"
Idk how much I love my tackle box emitting a vapor that coats things
So let me see if I got this straight . A rust preventive for packaged plastic bait . :cf
VCI = Volatile Corrosion Inhibitor. There is a ton of scientific papers on this technology. Volatile because it produces these magical vapors at room temperature, which means that it has to be in a sealed environment to work. I didn't read too much on it, but I think that it works at least in part by passivation, which allows the metal surface to better form an oxidized surface, and it works best on steels. The stuff can work for up to a couple years if stored properly. More if it hasn't already been setting on a store shelf for too long.
The stuff can be impregnated directly into plastic, so it is used for plastic wraps when shipping metal industrial parts that are not supposed to be coated in grease.
You can buy tackle boxes with those blue dividers that is impregnated with the stuff, and there are also plastic tabs, those "capsules" in the OP's photo, tool drawer liners, etc., for the consumer market - targeting fishing, firearms, tool storage, ice skate guards, car covers, etc. But I think that it mainly started out as an industrial product. And Zerust is an independent company. This is not something that Flambeau invented.
The SDS for the Zerust products that I could find are devoid of ingredients, but also don't list any hazards.
How well the stuff works for fishing tackle storage- I have no idea. But it looks like you need to keep the boxes closed and stored at room temperature for it to work and last, and it will take some time for it to start working again every time you open the box. And expect to have to replace the stuff every three years or so.
