Title: Penn Squall 16VS small crack on the handle sideplate
Post by: steelfish on May 09, 2025, 12:36:20 AM
so, the reel suffered a tiny crack on the sideplate and wondering if a bit a crazy glue can fix it or should I use something stronger?

for the spindle and hit or two with the hammer will do it

;D A mate brought me an Ambassadeur about a decade ago that he'd literally backed over.
Managed to save it, but it was properly mangled - a bit like Alex's Squall!

A tiny crack huh?

Reminds me of a job site conversation many years ago.
"He's got a little bit of a crack problem"
"There's no such thing as a little bit of a crack problem! Dudes smoking crack."

Yeah that reels got a little bit of a crack problem.

something similar, "somehow" they reel was on the boat trailer and got side smashed when they were loading the boat, at least was what he told me.

it was a fight of the boat versus the boat trailer and the reel was in the middle of the fight, the reel lost. No wonder or idea of the drag settings  ???

not an option, the guys is as broke as the reel LOL, so, he asked me to try to repair it, the replacement parts that so far needs to be replaced are still way below of half the price of a new reel.

To confidently fish this reel —- it needs a new sideplate, spool shaft, etc., etc. —- and still may or may not be right when completed.

Stuff can be put back together, but I wouldn't do it —- or put my name on the reel afterwards.

Best, Fred

I put effort to put that really CLEAR to the owner, even with those new parts, the reel might feel rough when it get just assembled or maybe with luck it will feel nice and smooth when it get just assembled but might develop roughness /noise/etc when fighting a fish because another parts got a hair bent and he was OK with that.

That said, to me, if some guys like and enjoy to change 120% of the stock parts of a 113h reel and still call it an upgraded 113h reel when its actually a brand new and different reel, I think its not that bad to get new parts for that reel 16VS Squall reel and maybe even get some more parts to make it work as new, to my knowleage even with 75% of brand new parts from mystic for the 16 VS Squall reel it will be still cheaper that a fully upgraded and metalized 113h reel  ^-^

There are a few used ones on eBay, parts might be more $.

https://www.ebay.com/itm/197127460403?_skw=squall+16&itmmeta=01JTV0B1BAXD8Z5EZF3WF47XMV&hash=item2de5b65633:g:zi8AAOSwbwNn2zEr&itmprp=enc%3AAQAKAAAA8FkggFvd1GGDu0w3yXCmi1e2hOV0x5Gw%2FasJDoqcvZ8XxK4oGmDTTv4dt3iVr91d%2BoCVghMPpRgDkxkDfRarW1bwDAxHSnhyZJuQxdge3BRqjXvo3WbcUT1UJ%2FP2BqZV4B0IhDkgZEV5EZyEhG8vc6hv5qbZ3aOJe9oI0QW3fBpc3u56%2F6jvrg%2BtczYAKHCgLP%2BnemtwVva92LyWP15Fd%2BBXv49P22ajywFfHXpvuSRUCxbJu8ZlYnRxFoS%2FRUFEFoJRWnD3qchTqvsAQeSNtku1OH6vMRaK%2BnrbvwFY6e1MocMBV%2FcPpOayB6Rv6EAUlQ%3D%3D%7Ctkp%3ABk9SR-SVrODWZQ

well, thats always an option, the owner actually saw that option, to buy a used one, but he still went for the repair route

I think there would be so many things tourqued out of shape you would never get it to mesh to an acceptable level.

dude! mexican peso worth nothing agaist USA dollars, so, its not the same to spend $100 USD (paying with pesos at pretty high exchange rate) than paying $250 so, our acceptable level is rated accordly with your wallet  :-\

I looked up the exchange rate when I looked for a used reel on eBay, the exchange rate is as low as I can remember.

well, the reel was repaired with brand new replacement parts from mystic and it seems to be working pretty good, so good that it just need the real world test to check if the repair job was a success.

the next is a short video of the reel working as good as it was before the accident

freel spool is smooth, no weird sounds while cranking with the drag activated, two speed system working as it should

time will tell ......... and I will tell you back

Yeah, I was sure from the first pictures, it was a potential parts reel. Great job! But keep us posted on the real world tests.
