Title: Bridge Sleeve Freeplay Penn 506
Post by: Rush on May 09, 2025, 01:27:47 AM
Hi All!
I've got a Penn 506 with Free Play in and out on the bridge sleeve.... There is movement of about 1/8 inch when you pull on the bridge sleeve.  Is thing worn out?

Thanks in advance for the assist!

Russ

I would check if the sleeve pin is missing or creatively replaced with something smaller diameter.  This:

Thanks Jason,
I'll pull the bridge sleeve off tomorrow and check the pin.

1/8" is a lot. Bet it's the pin.

Well, I was able to get the bridge sleeve off.  There was a pin present that was tight.  This will be an opportunity to  get a Cortez Conversion bridge sleeve.  I was going to try and install a double dog bridge that I've got, but I understand it won't fit the 505/506 models.....  Will keep you posted

ugh.  The stainless bridge sleeve is out of stock at Mystic.  Let me know if anyone has a spare for sale.

Did we figure out why the sleeve end play was so extreme?  I would think the only thing would be if the groove in the bridge plate is worn/out of spec?  I also believe (not gonna do a AT website search, I'm doing it from memory) that it was a "thing" to slip a Delrin under the sleeve specifically to help take up some slop? - john

I've used brass and SS washers under the sleeve. Never thought of using delrin. Why not though?

I really can't find a reason for the free play unless the reel was made in the period when they changed the cut on the bridge shaft.  Mystic shows two different ones.  Maybe the reel was made during this period.  I'm not sure of the age as this reel as I purchased off Ebay.  Comparing the pin to the groove cut on the shaft there is quite a bit of gap between the pin and groove.
I may be able to shim up the sleeve with a Delrin washer and will order one with a stainless sleeve if I can ever find one.......... The search and mystery continues!

Rush, I have a new, still in original packaging with ss pin, 416 stainless steel gear sleeve with 10 teeth, fine threads, made by Pro Challenger for 505 or 506HS. Bought it about a month ago, but reel plans changed. $30 includes shipping. PM me if you're interested.

Well, stainless bridge sleeve installed.  The free play on the bridge is gone.  I guess either the factory bridge and or pin had excessive play/wear. Install wasn't quite plug and play since the pin needed to be trimmed and handle nut threads needed to be retaped.  Now it's time to catch a Lingcod on this thing.  :d
