Title: Best arbor knot for a shallow spool
Post by: JasonGotaProblem on May 15, 2025, 03:30:54 PM
There have been a lot of discussions on here about how to attach line to a spool arbor. They generally focus on the strongest and most reliable knots, and that is important. But many of the preferred options are quite bulky. On a spool that's only 2mm deep that starts to really matter.

For the folks fishing with shallow-spool reels, what type of arbor knot are you using to attach small diameter braid to your spool?

I use unni on all my reels. Works great. Put flex tape under.

Use a series of five clove hitches laid side-by-side.  Orient them so they tighten as the line is pulled

Putting flex tape on the arbor of a 2mm deep spool will eat half the line capacity.

My 2c is uni but go around the arbor a few times before you tie the knot.

3-5 turns backwards then tie a unni.
