I saw this 27 minutes after you put it up, thanks Steve.
I fish Alejos on the lite end of your recommendations, a Seeker 1x3, Penn International VISX 16 and 80#, but after catching a 48# YT I think a 100# rig might not be a bad idea.
As always great information Steve. Thank you. Bill
Awesome Steve, you surely are living the life being able to have a great job that pays you to go fishing, talk fishing, using some of the best gear available out there on the market and be on the water exploring and fishing the worlds best fishing areas. :fish :d Steve knowing that Penn is your product of choice, but would a Daiwa Saltiga 60 2 speed be sufficient to fish these monster yellows and big Yellowfin?
Great video Steve! Good luck on the Shogun 8-day! We'll be out there on my annualvRP 8-day so find the fish! - john
lots of fun!!!!

Saltigas are excellent reels. According to their catalogue spec, they have 33strike/45full lbs of max drag, which should be enough.
I have been playing with a FTHII60NLD2 thinking it would work as a back up large YT reel for my International VISX 16. The 80 is only a few ounces heavier than the 60N with the same low gear ratio (1.6:1) and would be a good dual use reel for large YT and night jigging for BFT.
I'd like to see a 1:1 low gear ratio option for the FTHII60N, 80 and International VISX 16 and 20.

Depends on if you use jigs or bait most often.
The 60N is designed as a heavy jigging reel, with a considerably higher speed retrieve in "high", and of course the narrow frame to make levelwinding easier.
For heavy bait [and trolling] the 80 size is probably the better choice.
A 1:1 "low" sounds good in theory, but in practice it can be difficult to keep the line tight & rod bent, especially under rough sea conditions.
For those who really want it, Cal Sheets does offer it as a custom option.
I talked to Cal's about making a run and the demand is not there. I have 2 older International reels, a 50S and 70, with 1:1 low and it helps with large fish and arthritic hands.
I've been busted off on 80# fishing the Alijos ridge. 100# is the way to go there!

"And therein lies the rub"
If the specialized customer base that Cal has does not create sufficient demand, it really would not work for a manufacturing company making products that need to be sold globally.
Unfortunatly true. It would be a small nitch market like large grouper.
