Title: Penn International 70VS problem
Post by: Tzer on August 06, 2025, 07:32:25 AM
I have a 70VS 2speed that a friend has given me to fix & service.
Obvious problem is that when rotating the handle the spool does not turn, its as if the drag has been loosened all the way back but thats not the case. I feel something has let go on the inside but before I pull reel apart has anyone had this happen and can give me an insite to the possible problem before I start. Not really looking forward to this as I doubt this reel has ever had a service in its life, I can see a lot of elbow grease, brute force and lot of swearing happening.
Thanks in advance

See if the spool moves towards the handle side of the reel when moving the drag lever forward. Should only move < 3mm or so, if it's attached internally.

The only way out is through! I'm working through my own issues with the same reel; see two other recent threads.  Get yourself a good electric screwdriver with multiple heads, print a schematic, and go slowly, taking pictures as needed to remind you how to put it back together. I see you're in New Zealand; not sure if there's a Penn Parts retailer there; if not, you'll probably want to get everything you need in one order.  With my project, I've done 3 separate orders from Mystic parts over the past 3 weeks as I keep discovering issues.  I should've been more patient and taken stock of everything i needed before ordering parts.  Oh well, I'm only out a few extra dollars on shipping.

Does the spool turn in free-spool mode at all?
