Been away for a while and I am booked for a 10 Day this November. I have done 8-10 days in the past, but this is a little later and I am thinking I need to add a bigger rig to my quiver just in case we see larger YFT down south, or we get a chance to go after the bigger BFT's offshore and around San Diego on this trip.
Looking for advice on Rod and Reel selection for a 100lb setup that can be used for kind of everything in that class of fish. Wheter it be jigging, live bait, Dropper Loop, what have you.
My Long Range gear is primarily Avet and Calstar, but I am open to hear what others suggest for a solution what I am looking to do. I was thinking of getting a Calstar 770XH and pairing with either an Avet HX Raptor or Makaira 16. Maybe I should be looking at bigger reels, but that is why I am here.
Thanks
makaira 20 or penn visx 30, seeker osp 2x4, united composites viper, or fishing syndicate offshore 750 xxh. you're close. swing by the house sometime for a beer!!!!
Alan, I'll be there to get all my reels refilled sometime soon. Messaged you last week, but I need to call you align on a time.
In my opinion the Avet HX Raptor is a 80# class reel and I fish mine 50/60 pound. The Avet EX30 would be better choice for 100# if you go with Avet, 80/100 is where I feel one needs to step up to a heavier reel.
Due to my back and leg issues I tend to fish lighter than Alan does and usualy fish my VISX 16 at 80# for plus size tuna but have used my VISX 20 when larger fish are around.
Alan's rod suggestions are good, I have a Seeker OSP 1x3 (80#) and a first year production 2x4 (100#) that work well.
For a mid price rod the Penn Carnage West Coast or Okuma PCH rods are very nice for the price. My last 2 cow BFT were caught on a Carnage III CARWIII60100C7 (80#) and I think the CARWIII80130C7O would make a good mid price 100# class rod.

this......
Circling back to this now and I think I will do what most are suggesting and get the Mak 20 and a UC76 Viper. Time to go shopping
PM Randy with Vintage Fishing Gear on here and see if he has any used Mak 20's
You will not be disapointed with this choice.
100% on the UC Viper. My winch of choice is a 20VISX, but cannot fault the other suggestions. And while it has not come up, mine is loaded with Jerry Brown 100 hollow....versatility of using like regular line or taking the advantages of hollow for splicing. - john
If you are going to be using it for jigging, go with solid braid as it produces less drag than hollow...

Going to be my only heavy outfit for a while, so it will need to be my flyline, jig, dropper, chunk, whatever for heavier line. I have never run hollow, but only because I'm just ignorant of its benefits. I do understand it allows for more line and lays on the spool better. I do like the idea of learning about splicing, thougn.

Thanks, I'll reach out. I'm very hesitant to buy used anything, but worth looking into, especially since I don't fish all that often.
Randy does not sell junk.

Randy sells only high gear and it's always in better shape than he describes. If he has anything I need I wouldn't hesitate to buy from him even without seeing pics.
" Randy does not sell junk." - Keta
FWIW I agree with that wholeheartedly. He has always provided me with spot on descriptions and pictures. Very pleased with purchases from him.
When dealing with Randy the conversation goes something like this:
Me- "Randy would you happen to have XYZ?"
Randy- "Yes I do."
Me- "I'll take it."
Randy- "Do you want pictures?"
Me- "NOPE, what do I owe you?"
No need to haggle, if he says it's "good" I know it's great.
Only complaint I have, is I bought a 10/0 Senator from him, and when I tried to service it, carbon fiber drags and fresh grease were already there. Nothing for me to do 🤣🤣🤣
