Title: Surfmaster 250 Parts Interchangeability
Post by: SouthcoastFisherman on September 25, 2025, 03:08:03 AM
Hello,

I just picked up a Surfmaster 250 and was wondering what parts from other reels are interchangeable with this model?

Surfmaster 250 parts are compatible with many other Peen reels. Take a look at Mystic Reel Parts list for the 250 if you're looking to match or swap a part. A 250 was my first Frankenreel because you can swap so many parts.

I built a 501 and 99 width Surfmaster 250 for inshore bottom fish.

Isn't it basically a jigmaster with slower (Penn 60) gears? So all the jigmaster structural components would fit, just different gears?  I believe a 501 width jigmaster with a 250 head plate is called a "blackfish special?"

What Rick(MACflyer) said. You can print or make a list of the part numbers for the 250. For example; any part #-60 will fit many Penn reels. A real useful thing for me and old Penn reels is using that list to see which parts are still available for sale, before I buy a used reel.

This is probably obvious to lots of you but I had plenty of interchangeability questions on many of those smaller Penn reels. Then I realised the booklet that comes (or used to) with Penn reels has a complete list of all the parts in it for all reels and it is a simple matter to read across or down to see which reel part matches one from another.

I have a binder full of schematics I printed out over the years. It has one of every Penn reel I ever got.

I also printed the parts charts so very easy to cross reference. But I bet Ted has most of it memorized.

I also bought a Daiwa catalog which has all the reels we chased for awhile here. It also has a bunch of early spinning reel schematics that I never look at.

And of course individual ProGear, Shimano stuff.
