Title: DQ 1400 spool
Post by: quang tran on October 08, 2025, 10:20:06 PM
My DQ 1400 quick release spool doesn't lock up tight on pin ,easy to pull it out without push button in . Can we able to fix it ? Sound like the spring inside is broke , never can take it apart to see how it work ?

That is a good point, Joe —-

No , I keep these the same . Add some washer to adjust spool high for even line wrap . This reel have no asbestos drag washers . I like asbestos drag

Oh. The spool on yours/mine also, says "ASBESTOS". I finally jumped into the SS DAM Quick thing with a 3000. Mine did have 2-hexagon shaped asbestos drag washers, one on bottom and one in upper drag stack. Replaced both with C-Tex 1.5mm. Much smooother now. Originals were 1.3mm, now the spool should be 0.4mm higher, so will see later if it still winds level.

So far only worked on the spool, but I'm REALLY impressed with the typical old-school DQ quality. As of yet, only dissatisfied with the plastic drag clicker on the spool bottom. Not loud enough.

Also, mine does have the "brass flex keepers" and the release button works fine. Isn't that the only spring part up in there?

Good to see you climbed aboard the "Thousand DQ" ship.  Was the 3000 too big, too small or right size for your Kayak adventures?

It looks to be the perfect size for inshore casting. Looks moderately used, everything works well. Have avoided skirted spool reels for a long time, until I got 4 of the Penn's from Bryan Young's estate. The DQ looks to be comparable to those.

When I saw the picture of the brake spindle with the chrome top and semi round bottom , I thought that it still had the feathers  on the axel .    I only have one 3002 and it has a black plastic release button with the adjustable spool shimming at the bottom . It also has top and bottom nylon drag washers . This reel has been on the back burner for me . Was not impressed with the handle , graphite spool or the rotor assembly .
