Title: lesson learned on cleaning reels properly after ocean fishing
Post by: PiusM on April 13, 2012, 07:01:20 PM

I want to pass along to the group something I learned from talking with the Shimano reel guys at a local bait shop show and sale. I asked them why the ARB on the crank shaft froze up on one of my Tekota 600's. They pointed out that I had inadvertently shoved salt water back of the crank bearing seal when I backed off the star drag before hosing down the reel with fresh water even tho' I used the soaker setting on the hose end for a non-forceful deluge. They recommended keeping the star drag set to shield the bearings, using a light misting spray instead of a deluge, allowing the reel to dry, and then backing off the drag for storage.
