My 2016 has the original AGM battery-yes,it's 10 years old.Now that I am retired I only drive the truck to get lawn mower gas or on fishing trips.Maybe once or twice/month.
So I just discovered it's struggles starting up.I never heard of AGM batteries until now or a battery ever lasting 10 years ::)
The truck has stop/start which I read agm batteries are better for that.
Also there is a BMS reset procedure after you replace the battery or it will so it automatically in a few weeks, they getting too fancy .

Just replaced a regular old O'Reilly's SuperStart battery in the Sequoia Saturday. It was still working but ran down after sitting unstarted for 4 weeks. That sucker was 7 years old. 😳
AGM battery makes sense in the newer cars since they stop and start all the time. Just learned I was supposed to be charging my boat's AGM battery with a charger with at least 6 amps. Been using a trickle charger, 800 milliamperes, since day one, and battery is 5 years old. Directions, which I just recently read on the batteries website, said NEVER use less than 6 amps. Hope I didn't damage it as I wouldn't mind getting a couple more years out of it: expensive.
Didn't know that about agm not sure what our ATVs have. I keep a trickle on my grandson's ATV since its not driven much until they are in town.
I know LI-PO charging has specific safety concerns.
AGM; absorbed glass mat. What does BMS (reset procedure) stand for?
I do know that on my 2010, if I change out or clean certain things, such as the throttle body, I godda put it through an engine running re-learn procedure. Regular lead-acid battery though, no reset needed.
Gregg BMS=Battery Management System. The reset is for the computer regardless of battery type.
A few years ago Ford had a recall to update the software on my truck & they sent a tech out to do it in our garage.
Funnie thing is he told me I needed rear brakes without even looking ::) just like they lied to me when I use to get my oil changed under warranty.Every vehicle they touch seems to need rear brakes.Hence,I no longer go there unless necessary.
Man, that BS is so common now, them type a people have probably run all the honest mechanics out of most of the shops. If you get an honest one, pay 'em what they're worth.
"Sir, you better let us flush-out your power steering system"😳😠.
I have a locally owned tire shop that will do brake pads for $40 if I supply the pads I get from rock auto. These guys take appointments & attack a vehicle like full service stations of yesteryear. They can be done before I could even have it jacked up.They set the bar high for any business,it's a shame all are not so.I think the dealer said $300 to replace just the rear pads,no rotors I almost LOL in his face, they had been done less than a year earlier at the tire shop ;D
I got 16 years outta the twin batteries in my 2003 cummins Ram truck, and the batteries were 2 years old when I bought the truck. 15 years outta my twin boat batteries. They dont make em to last nowadays
I ordered a battery from Walmart free shipping no core required. My 1st time doing online for a vehicle,AGM batteries are even more costly ,got it on sale $138 after shipping.Packaged nicely I have to keep this box ::)
That's a great price! Is the warranty 3 years like their lead acid?
Rick,
I suppose the warranty is the same & I didn't have to do any type of smansy reset, clock & all settings stayed put.
I put an AGM battery in my Xterra. Supposedly they last forever. The first one went kaput about 6 months in. The replacement died a few days after the 2 year warranty ended. Replaced with a standard battery. Autozone got an extra $50 from me for the promise of longevity. But I won't be fooled again.
AGM batteries have very specific charging requirements. If you don't have a vehicle that expects an AGM, or buy a very expensive AGM with a built-in BMS, they will die pretty quickly due to never receiving a proper charge. Your car's alternator likely outputs 14.4v maximum, AGMs like 14.5-14.8v and in some cases even more.
EDIT: They are incredible batteries (broadly speaking), though. They will take some absolute abuse in terms of deep cycling and huge current outputs far, far better than traditional lead acid or Lead Calcium. They just have quirks that need to be respected.
