Title: 2011 - 2015 LINCOLN MKX Vapor Canister Purge Valve Replacement
Post by: jgp12000 on January 22, 2026, 05:08:54 PM
Our 2012 MKX was getting a check engine light & hard to start right after fillups. This was an easy fix.$35

Yeah, I need to get under my 2000 Tahoe for the same thing, need to get it taken care of soon because selling it to a friend and Annual is due in April.  Waiting for it to snow so I can be like Shibs working in the driveway  ;D

I have a P0453 check Eng. light issue. "High fuel tank pressure". Open the fuel tank cap and indeed fuel/air mixture from the tank vents out. "Woosh". The sensor(on top of the tank)is reading it correctly, I believe. So possibly the Purge valve isn't working.
No issues with starting after fill-up. However, if the light is on, it won't take more than about 1/10 of a gallon before the nozzle shuts off. So some kinda valve is shutting-off flow into and out of the tank. Anti-roll over safety system? I can vent the tank and erase the CEL before filling and everything is good, until the tank is about 1/2 empty or so, and it repeats.
Don't think mechanics would do anything other than maybe put it on the lift and change-out the sensor. Then tell me it's fixed without trying to replicate the problem first. Which means I'd have to bring it back.
Thanks for the video. I will research a purge valve change-out. First I gotta locate it?

Gregg,
does/is it supposed to have a vented gas cap or might have been replaced at some point. Our MKX was throwing other O2 codes & surging or shutting off at idle.I suppose the EVAP could cause a myriad of issues.

I use to pump gas as a teenager back then when folks paid cash, common practice was to try squeeze enough in to round up to an even dollar amount :o

Wifey read nowadays its critical with these smancy vehicles to stopping pumping when the pump stops. The tank pressure dictates other parameters. I am old school, but I had learn to do this not sure, if its a fact or not.

Well, I've heard that fuel can somehow get into the charcoal canister when one overfills. The gas breaks down the charcoal supposedly and it gets into to evaporative system lines, maybe also the purge system?

Older vehicles did their venting through the gas cap, but that leads to more air pollution. This is a guess on my part, does it sound right?

Something is also wrong with my Ford Van. I believe that while filling somehow the fuel backs-up(maybe?)and the nozzle keeps shutting off, unless I almost literally trickle it in. I have to fill it early in the AM when there are no lines of others waiting behind me, because it takes so long with a 30 gallon tank.

My stupid Haynes manual does describe how the system works(both vehicles), but says that the Evap. System is very complicated and best left to professionals. Sounds from that description like there could be several different causes.

So look in the engine compartment for a little round thingie with a fuel line attached as well as maybe a wiring harness...?

What O2 codes? Could it have been the oxygen sensors or maybe the catalytic converter?

I think that it's good to keep fuel/air emissions out of the atmosphere as much as possible, by recirculating them back into the engine to be burned, but I hear of many problems with these systems as though they haven't perfected them to work past the warranty period.

Most ATVs have vented gas caps, but aren't driven as much.

Some vehicles have a "check fuel cap" light also if its loose.

The MKX threw 4 codes:

P144A-EVAP vapor line restricted
P1450-PCM excessive vacuum in fuel tank
P2196-O2 bank 1 sensor 1 rich
P2198-O2 bank 2 sensor 1 rich

I think the EVAP attributed to all 4 codes & surging/shutoff at idle (too rich/flooding out).
