Title: Preventing springs from corroding
Post by: work2fish on February 06, 2026, 01:36:33 AM
Just a quick question on discouraging springs from corroding...

Is it best to put grease or oil on them, spray them with CorrosionX, or some other trick?

Some years ago Sal (RIP) did a test with some nails in a board submerged in saltwater for quite some time. He found that all protect roughly equally well, so your choice will likely be driven by which grease suits other aspects of your needs, and just make sure some gets to the springs. I think grease is better than oil just for sticking longer but there's some pretty long lasting oils.

(Opinion not a statistic) More springs are replaced because they fly across the room than because they corroded away. The best corrosion protection is the one you actually use. And superlube.

But I just kinda use superlube and TSI 321 for everything. When I finish this gallon jug of TSI I'll probably get a bottle of superlube oil.

Springs are the only thing that evade my "just a thin layer you're not a toddler" rule, sometimes I put a glob of grease on sorings to stick them in place for complicated assembly. That can't hurt their corrosion protection.

Just my opinions.
