Title: S229-5 Reel Disassemblty Pointers- Broken Newell Bar screws. How do you do it
Post by: Fishgolfman on March 02, 2026, 02:26:51 PM
First service encounteer with the S229-5. I got it as a parts reel, thinking I could fix it. I Did not realize that non handle side plate has two nuts that cannot be removed. How do you do that? On the handle side of reel I have a broken post and a missing head. I see that it's a very small hex nut. I need to remove the side plate to access the reel bar. Or do I just put the reel onto a Tiboron 229 frame. Still have to remove the non handle side plate of reel.

I'm not a Newell expert, but if you're talking about reel seat bolts, I believe the S model reel seat bolts go all the way through to other side. Not sure about the other frame bolts.

Yes, long screws go all the way thru the cross bars to the other side. Not a great design. You'll need to pull those out to get the reel apart. Tapping them out from the handle side or vice grips if you can get the screw head to stand a little proud on the non handle side. Be persistent
Some of the screws are threaded into the ring too, that's probably that tiny hex bolt you're seeing

Well the long screw broke off at the handle side end. I tapped it out. Good source of a replacement screw that threads thru from clicker plate side to handle side.

I have a some and might have what you need. If you can post a picture with a measuring device next to it I'll check
Honestly just a horrible design you should consider a Tiburon frame or after market bars and a base. You'd need some different screws too which are available on eBay.  I probably have some threaded graphite Newell bars and a base which would work too

I was going to fix and flip the reel. I have P220 tiburon frame reel that i use.  Any reason to have 229? Plus Tiburon frame is 100$ after tax and shipping

I like the 220 better, but that's a personal preference. Feels more balanced when cube shaped. I wouldn't put too much money in it if you're going to flip it, S series weren't great and don't fetch much money, $150 on a really good day
I have a bunch of those long screws, post what size it needs, length and type of head, there's a few different ones.

Done. Got replacement long screw from a newell parts guy in Victorville CA. The broken culprit with rust on the head area on non handle side and break on thread! Glad i didn't have to go Tiburon frame. Will now replace bearings and drag washers. Sell or fish??
