Title: Vintage built on Fenwick blanks
Post by: Uncle Grizzly on March 11, 2026, 01:39:29 PM
Greetings fellow fishers.   I have a question for rod folks.  On a recent quest to acquire a Penn 940 Levelmatic and a Shakespeare 2081 Sea wonder, both in good shape, I brought home an assortment of other reels and rods.  Among the rods are 6 Fenwicks or customs built on Fenwick blanks from the 60s and 70s. a 2 piece SP846, a 2 piece SP784, a one piece 784 and the others do not show model numbers.  One of those is a 5.6 ft. ultralight with a reel seat that slides on the cork grip.  Do any of these have any value other than as backup or rods to match with reels of the same vintage?

Thanks in advance,

Buster

PS I'm still unable to excise the demon that won't allow me to obtain pix from my phone.

Hi Stan —-

Any Fenwick rods, whether custom built on Fenwick blanks, or factory rods —- should be in the starting lineup of an anglers arsenal.

They are excellent in both quality and value.  Of course, condition is everything.

Best, Fred

I have a 5'6 Fenwick UL (yellow glass) from the 70s that used to have a Tennessee style grip like yours. Against the advice of people who said I was committing sacrilege, I stripped it and turned it into a baitcast rod for BFS fishing with 1/16th oz lures.

It has rapidly become my absolute favorite rod to fish with and now always stays in my truck.

Yes, they do have monetary value to the right collector. It was in excellent condition and I could have probably gotten $100 or more for it. but the enjoyment value to me as the user far exceeds what I'd have sold it for.

Thanks for the input, I intend to put some of them to use.  The SP 846 had the Shakespeare Sea Wonder 2081 on it.  The previous owner told me he used that set up for lake sturgeon.  I will most likely use a Mitchell or DAM out of my arsenal on that one since I am a southpaw.  I did one small cork repair on one fore grip otherwise all I did was clean them up and reseal the grips
