Title: Help needed on 9/0
Post by: darkarcher1175 on March 16, 2026, 12:07:04 AM
Good afternoon, I put together a hot rodded 9/0 , all stainless internals, tib frame, Cortez side plates, aluminum spool , and Bryan young drag kit. My problem is when it's in free spool with drag applied it's not actually free spool the drag is still working on the spool, and when the handle is turned in free spool it will spin the spool. Any thoughts would help I'm at a loss

 Ok, first question...

Did you put a bunch of grease on the drive side of the spool shaft ?

 2nd question...

Is the freespool lever stiff to shift into freespool ?

 3rd question...

With lever in freespool position, crank down the star and grab the spool while turning the handle. Does the spool still turn with drag tightened down while you're cranking on the handle while holding onto the spool ?

Just trying to figure out if the pinion isn't fully disconecting from the spool, or maybe too much grease on the spool shaft that coukd make the spool turn when you crank the handle while in freespool mode

if the spool turns in free when you turn the handle, then the pinion gear is not free floating on the spool shaft.  polishing the inside of the pinion gear and the spool shaft should fix that problem.  please keep us updated.  thanks!  alan

I've run into the not fully releasing to free spool issue a few times.  Thanks for the tips.

"All stainless internals"? Bridge plate, yolk, eccentric jack, pinion, main gear, gear sleeve...?
Any marks on the spool shaft shoulders or pinion gear, maybe from improper disengagement?
