Title: (Take Two) Different Axle shafts for Garcia Mitchell 305?
Post by: pennwoodsman on March 22, 2026, 05:11:54 PM
The other week I posted a question looking for information on different axle shafts I received for a model 305 reel. I was hoping someone could help me identify the shafts. That post is off track now from the original question and I didn't want to muddy that post further with a reply. So, I am starting a new thread. When I ordered parts for a reel I was working on, I received three different axle shafts from an online parts supplier. They are shown in the photo below.  The supplier claimed all three were part number 81120 and could not provide any additional information on the difference. (Note: this is also the same part number for a Mitchell 304 reel axle) In the photo below, the top shaft is Mitchell part number 81120. This is the correct part for a 305 reel. (shorter splines)

In doing some further research I discovered the axle shaft, in the middle of the photo, is for the Mitchell C.A.P. reel. This was the earlier reel made by Carpano & Pons.  I was able to verify this by finding an example listed on the big auction site. I also found a YouTube video of a C.A.P. reel service and I could clearly see the longer splines in the shaft. Unfortunately, I didn't have an example in the shop or a schematic to verify this earlier. So far, I have not been able to turn up any information on the shaft pictured on the bottom. This shaft has no splines and one side of the upper part of the shaft has been machined flat. Hopefully, one day, I will be able to find what reel this shaft fits. If anyone has an idea on the bottom shaft please let me know.
Thanks for looking.
