Title: Pelican 100 vs 0rvis 100. Big differences
Post by: Fishgolfman on April 19, 2026, 08:47:07 PM
I was and others that Pelican 100 was simply a rebadged Orvis 100 or vice versa. Had to get a bunch of Zangi parts out and thought why not rebuild the Pelican 100 as body broken at stem and seat chipped.
Well side plates exchange easily as well as spools. Differences are in internals. Pelican body accommodates a longer shaft that goes into body. The pelican shaft is also thinner overall and shafts cannot exchange for each other. I have extra Orvis bodies but makes me think whether I should try exchanging given differences and the worm drive in the body has a differnt diameter

I'm intrigued by all of the differences. I had an Alcedo Micron apart recently and discovered some differences between early and late models there too, so some parts interchange but others are a mile off.

I work on alcedo reels as well. Good to know about differences as well. The Pelican body and pinion gear are definitely different such that shaft diameter is not compatible.

Do you know which version came first? Did they cheap out as production went on, or did they have to beef it up after weaknesses were identified?

Midway tommy probably knows. In the italian Zangi compendium no mention is made of manufacturing differences as I recall

There were quite a few variations in that style of reel over the years. The Pelican 100 came first. Orvis actually offered the Pelican 100 on their 1950 catalog and it is shown as a full bail there. All the other various reels offered in that catalog were half bails.

In 1953 that reel transitioned into the Orvis 100. The Zangi Pelican 100 was still being offered in Europe after the Orvis adaptation.
