Title: Trilene Knot
Post by: Jim O on May 06, 2026, 11:19:58 PM
So I'm trying to get proficient with this knot.  It is so similar to the Improved Clinch, which I've been tying forever, that it should be a snap.  The problem is that I'm tying it with #60 mono, and cinching it down is a ####.  How many wraps should I be using with #60 mono?

FYI, I'm attaching the hook to a steel rod in a vise.  Both hands are free.

Try 6 and then if not happy try 4.test with a scale. I prefer a uni knot..   easy and strong.

I realized I was adding a step that doesn't belong, passing the tag end back through the second loop like you would do with the Improved Clinch.  Now that I've eliminated that, it's an easy knot to tie, maybe easier than the San Diego...

I use the trilene knot up to 40lb.  After that it is San Diego Jam or Double San Diego Jam.

For some reason I'm having a hard time with the Trilene knot now on #30 mono.  Cinching it down without anything to attach the hook to is a problem.  I'm doing 5 wraps.

With most knots that involve wraps, the heavier the line, the fewer the wraps.  Nor sure I've ever used less than 4, though.

I second what Hardy Boy said, the uni knot is the way to go.
