Title: Penn Battle II issue
Post by: MolBasser on May 14, 2026, 02:58:13 PM
Hey all,

I have a Battle II 2000 that took a submersive dunk when I got knocked over by a wave surf fishing a number of years ago.  After the dunk it instantly started grinding like sand got in it so I took it home and rinsed it with fresh water and then proceeded to "I'm gonna get to that this weekend" for several years until now.  I took it apart, and as expected, bearings are rusty, but no major damage to gears or anything.  So it looked like the plan was to replace the two bearings and the anti reverse clutch and be good....

Here is my problem:  The final bearing (Key: 20) that is on the shaft (Key: 19) is stuck in the main body (Key: 1).  It is supposed to just pull out.  I have soaked it in penetrating oil to no effect, as I just can't figure out how to get leverage on these components without bending/breaking something.

Does anyone have some good suggestions on how to get this out.  The bearing is rough but it spins, but I really want to replace it an not just rebuild on top of it.

I ordered new bearings and a new clutch and they arrive today so I'd like to get this done this weekend I hope.

Cheers!

i took a look at the schematic.  https://www.mysticparts.com/Assets/images/pennparts/schematics/btlii2000.pdf  penetrating oil has never worked for me.  i guess just no patience.  i've always ended up pounding out the parts, or hitting the parts with a propane torch and then pounding it out.  looking at the schematic, i can't tell if all of the parts would survive getting cooked.   :-\

I mean, replacing the shaft and body is only like 22 bucks, so I may just toss in the towel and buy those.

yup.  so maybe give a few good whacks first and see if something gives.  sometimes, you really do just need a bigger hammer!!! ;D

If I could figure out how to wack it, I would.  There is a flange in the way in the body so I can't put a pin on the shaft to smack it......

Lotsa ball bearings in there. Your plan sounds good given the time it sat. What's key 98C look like?

There are a couple of ways to remove that bearing .  With the retainer off and the other parts are off and the pinion is still in , just put the rotor back on and hit it with a wooden handle .

Or use washers and pry it up with pliers or screwdrivers .

Another way is to put it in the freezer for a day . the bearing being steel will shrink .  the housing will shrink also , but when you take it out of the freezer , the housing will grow faster than the bearing . pound it in your hand and the bearing should fall out .

That's a good idea.

I chucked it.  The clutch was fubar.
