Title: Penn Deep sea 49
Post by: Swampfox on May 15, 2026, 01:04:45 AM
I have a great condition Penn Deep Sea 49 reel. What would be the best use of this reel? I was thinking maybe using as a kite reel.

The drag is not the strongest but  it might be enough for a kite reel and I think I read where they worked.  Lots of people used them for troling with monel line.

So definitely upgrade to new HT100 drag washers with cals grease, and maybe SS gear sleeve. Sir what would you recommend doing with the reel? It has really nice condition wire line on it now from previous owner.

Drag washers first and then see how the gearsleve holds out.

I was never a big fan of the 49 as I used the far stronger 349/349H reels for my fishing , Alaskan pacific halibut running 60# to well over 200#,  but it is a good reel.

What got me to buy it was the low cost, the condition and the beautiful etching on it.
