What rod and reel do you prefer for surface irons targeting YT?

I haven't made a decision.  I need so many rigs, like a #100... surface iron rig...

I know this post is a little old, but it has some great basic info. Personally, I have a phx 929h and a calstar 90j and i like both. I feel most comfortable casting with a 9 footer as my surface iron rod. As John states, rods and reels are totally up to you. When I was new to surface iron, I also didnt know what to get, but an inexpensive 929H came my way and it turned out great for me. I also prefer to cast with mono, 40 or 50 lb. I find it easier to cast, backlashes remove easier when I get them, and I dont get braid cuts when winding in. Any of John's choices will work, as well as many others not mentioned.

A Trini 16 could do double duty, 25-30# flyline & push to 40# for throwing iron.
A 20 size would be ideal for latter.

310Rodworks has a line of 8' rods (TTR6480) that could fit the bill.
