Hank, the Squidder has performed that function for about 90 years. Let that sink in, folks: 2026 car running in 2116? Not hardly. 2026 HVAC? MAYBE 2036. I prolly have ten. Their drawback is speed, 3.3:1 or so, meaning they they have small gears for drags as you know. Would I (cause I did) modernize to carbon fiber and use ole skool moly steel main gear with Newell bars? Damn skippy. Your watch-out will be to make sure the braid doesn't slip behind your spool flange depending on what spool you use, and braid can be hot line if you are trying to sling far. Personally, the Squidder is in its' sweet spot with 20lb mono and shock leader onna 11'foot medium action rod. No mag or brake (not counting finned spool requires educated thumb, and while a Squidder can be tuned to throw a long way in the right hands on a 13' rod, I'm not wanting to reel in 8 oz drum lead on that little retrieve. I have my most built-out Squidder on a 10'6" Harnell, tobacco blank with cork tape from decades ago, and that's not one I would part with.

Pics of the journey, please!

John

thanks; probably won't buy the reel, just wondering about performance.

It ruled surfcasting for about fifty years probably, until the Magpowers came out in the 80's.
