I have an old Abu Ambassadeur 1750A thats been in the family though my father says he doesn't remember how or when we got it. I think it must have been my grandfathers and my dad just never used it.
Anyway, upon trying to perform maintenance on it, i discovered what i believe is the spool bearing cushion (part number 2231) has been complete warn down. what i believe should be dome shaped is now flat on top. i was poking at it and it must have been worn thin cuz i literally poked a hole through what should be a harder kind of plastic or rubber.
I need help finding a replacement. either original or third party. It doesn't bother me which. it doesn't even need to be the same kind of part. any mod that people use that either replaces or bypasses this part will work for me. I really just want to keep the thing operational as it holds some sentimental value to me. Its my first Ambassadeur after all.
Thank you all in advance.
have a great day.
PM Tincanary if he doesn't des this. He may likely likely know, or Fred may have the part.
John
Thank you for advice. I PM'd Tincanary like you recommended.
Who is Fred? Is there someone on this message board just called Fred? I'd rather not bother an unrelated Fred for no reason by accident.
Thank you again in advance.
I am Fred (foakes).
Don't have part number 2231 in the ABU organizers.
I am fairly sure that Tincanary will have it. He is the expert on ABU baitcasters. He will get back to you soon, I am sure. He is very reliable.
It is just a bearing cushion to help center and adjust the spool tension under the offside spool tensioner cap.
One could be made easily enough, or one could use a round felt pad instead that is slightly modified and oiled. I have these if needed.
It is a small but important part to the proper operation of these ABU round bodied baitcasters.
They also might come up on e-Bay from time to time.
Best Regards, Fred
I think tincanary has an online shop.can't find it on here now though

^^^^yahtzee!!
I have an ABU 1750A if someone wants one. Offer up. Carry on.
Hi Foakes,
Thank you for the advice but unfortunately the part you are describing is the wrong part. That part goes inside the right thumb knob i believe. The part im looking for is a black rubber/plastic dome-shaped part that sits inside the left thumb knob.
Hi Rancanfish,
Thank you for the offer, but another thing i inherited from my dad was his selective ocd. it would bother me if i had to take apart 1 good real just to repair another. I would still be up 1 non-working reel and it would get under my skin so bad.
Sorry for being difficult.
I am attaching a pdf of the schematic. you might need to rotate it so its upright. part 2231 is all the way on the left and sits right under the left knob
what if i tried to recreate the dome shape by topping it with elmers glue...? Does that sound like a good idea?
really reaching for straws here.
Do you have some dimensions on this ? Should not be that hard to make a little piece of rubber cushion. That one doesn't really look that bad, after looking at this maintenance video.
https://youtu.be/QCNb0l3RYZI
About four minutes in is where he's playing with the spool bearing cushion.
I've never made a piece out of rubber before. im not that handy, but I'll try anything. I'll try to get the dimensions in a bit. The piece in the video does indeed have a flat dome like shape but mine is much flatter and squished. and the flat part is not parallel to the bottom. likes its been flattened afterwards or worn away. It also has a small hole in it that goes right through.
I will throw this out there . Water spicket washers . kitchen sink faucet replacement washers found at most hardware stores . Some are flat and some are domed .
Yeah, I was going to mention that Joe. I also don't see why he couldn't make something hard and put an O-ring on top of it. There's all kinds of little things that are similarly shaped. The little rubber feet off of all kinds of little doo-dads(appliances and electronics). Pencil erasers, even the buttons from your remote control lol.
When things aren't available anymore, you have to think outside the box lol!
