Bought this 500 Jigmaster and it was locked up tight! Even had fish scales inside!!

I opened it up. YUK!

That led to this and hopping on the web to get some parts!

This is where I am at to date. Notice the cold beer and a new t-shirt from Scott's (because I ordered my 1st parts through him).

I'mm pretty proud of my first repair so far. I'll see what's in store when I put it back together and take it on a Rockfish trip the 15th. Wish me luck!!!
good luck :)Watch out it gets addictive
Very nice usncporet. It's all down hill from there. Congratulations!
That bud light did a good job on those parts, I have to try some ;).
Good luck on your reel and fishing trip. Rockcod fishing at San Clemente Island has been very good this year.
2 good reports out of Avila since they reopened yesterday. May have to go out as soon as next week!
Watch out, you're past the point of no return now....., next it will be handles, then checking ebay for bargains, you never know what you'll end up with, I got a 113h off ebay with newell bars and 4:1 gears for cheap.... I hear you guys in Cali hit the big swap meets looking for reels on the cheap.... I bet that won't be your last purchase from Scotts.
That's quite an undertaking for the first time out... nice job!
I would change out the clutch and dog springs... they gotta be shot from being locked down for so long.
Good luck
Dom
Welcome to the Dark Side.. Be afraid, be very afraid!! LOL
;)
I see a lot of rust but I've seen far worse.
Are those the same parts after soaking? If so what did you soak the parts in? Dominick

Used some kroil and hoppes #9 that was on hand. The Bud light is so rare that I couldn't use it!
The reel is finished and runs real smooth. Will try it out the 15th
Next up is going to be a 209!

Okay, you need to teach us exactly what you have done to clean up those parts. I could surely use that technique now with the reel I am working on. PLEASE!!!
Wow some of those parts look almost new, great job on the rebuild

Used some kroil
Kroil is good stuf! I ran out a few years ago, where are you getting it?
Try Brownells. They sell loads of it.
Lee,
That reminds me, I've gotta get more because I only have the silikroil which has silicone in it to be water resistant. I'm not gonna use silicone inside my reels, but works great for dock/deck hardware. Amazon.com or Brownells.com and lots of auto parts stores here in the Northeast carry it. Sears used to carry it, but not sure if they still do.
I have to agree that is some of the best stuff on the market to unstick fasteners, but didn't know it would dissolve the rust as well as it did for Mel B.

Thanks for the great comments and questions. Being a newbie I greatly appreciate it.
Regular Kroil and a brass brush, a little elbow grease and some hoppes #9 with Q-tips in all the cracks and holes. Got the Kroil at Lowe's I believe a few years ago. I also like Sili-Kroil but didn't like the silicone idea inside the working parts. Going to spool it up with some 30# line tonight and work on the old 500 that it is replacing.
I really like the bench time!
Wow,
You chose the right reel to cut your teeth on! It was a piece of cake right? This web site is the best. Now you can take on even the most challenging of reels. Nice job! Enjoy this hobby, very rewarding.
Do a Google search for Kano Kroil and order it directly from the source. Great stuff and great job on the reel.
Great job on what everyone would call a basket case, it's a wonder Penn is still in business when so many reels like these can be resurrected, or maybe that's why they're still in business because they produced such a great many products!!
Now...we saw the parts...how about the completed reel? Thanks for sharing....Bill
