Title: how often is it necessary to take apart and grease up a reel?
Post by: pepperist on May 22, 2012, 10:48:44 PM
let's say you have a brand new reel that you've taken apart and given the "alan tani" treatment. when's the next time you have to open that reel up, assuming nothing gets dropped and submerged, and assuming you go fishing, say, 4 times a month? once a year? never again? and what do you fellas use to get old grease out? i've heard everything from wd40 to kerosene....

tight lines.  :)

In salt water, every 3-6 months.  Freshwater, once a year.

Depends on the reel brand its complexity and the conditions you used it in I think.  Ive had low profile baitcasters go down from getting caught in a rain storm.  Simpler reels perhaps couldve at least lasted the trip.
