Title: Shimano part #2170-oil or grease?
Post by: ccm on June 03, 2012, 01:33:21 PM
Hey guys,
I have several Curado 100b's that I am replacing bearings on and have a question about part # 2170. I believe this is called a pinion bearing but am not sure. A couple of questions:
1. Does this bearing turn when the spool is spinning during a cast?
2. If not, would it be wise to use grease on this bearing rather than
oil?
I fish only saltwater and this bearing seems to go out quicker than the spool bearings. This bearing seems to be the most exposed bearing on the reel which is probably why it goes out the most often. I always rinse my reels very well after a day on the water and tear them completely apart once a year for a detailed cleaning.

Thanks for the education.

Bearing 2170 does NOT turn with spool.   It is for Pinion gear.
You will notice the ID is larger then spool shaft, ~ sized to fit Pinion...

This bearing is (as you say) first to go, water from spool & line comes in & onto it often...
Pack it with grease....   ;D
