Hi Alan, love all of your tutorials which has inspired me to start servicing my own reels. I've notice in alot of your tutuorials that you grease the inside of the reels that you service, what type of grease are you using to grease the inside? your trusty yamaha blue grease or drag grease (Cals/Shimano)? I typically grease the gear assembly with penn blue reel grease and then grease the main gear and drags with Cals drag grease. I understand that mixing grease is not a good thing should i be greasing my gear assembly with drag grease as well? Thanks.
well, about not mixing greases, you've seen that beat up old toothbrush i use? yup, that one. well, it has probably 20 different kinds of greases on it! ;D
seriously, though. i was trying a bunch of different greases over the summer. some of these were pretty expensive. now i'm back to my tried and true blue yamaha engine grease for general purpose stuff. what can i say? dirt cheap, stays blue forever so i can identify it easily, even years down the line. for drag washers, i'm still using cal's. for bearings, i bounce back and forth between extreme reel + and corrosion x. i think it does not matter in most applications, as long as you keep your spool bearings cleaned and lubed. i am resigned to the fact that there will never be a perfect spool bearing solution................
Thanks for the reply. I keep 3 different old toothbrushes for each type/brand of grease is use... ;D One more question if you don't mind, do you grease the inside of graphite reels since they are pretty resistant to corrision? Thanks.
yes, absolutely! salt will not corrode graphite, but it will definitely stick!!!!!!!!!!
I bought a bunch of Daiwa sealine parts from Tuna's Reel Troubles and for an extra 1$ he threw 1.5 oz of this red grease.
Has anybody ever used this?

Anyone have any suggestions on a good 'high end' grease to use on a 'high end'...~$1000+ Hardy fly fishing reel?
Use Penn blue grease. I don't know of anything "better".

The beauty of fly reels is that they have no multiplying gears spinning rotors and such so, yea, I would use a marine bearing grease. Long lasting protection is what you would want on one of those and nothing is better other than *perhaps* corrosion-x grease. Not oil or "HD" but the actual grease product. I have no idea on it's other properties (ie thick or thin) but the protection will be second to none.
But I would not hesitate to use any marine bearing grease. I doubt any reel deals with a harsher job and environmental conditions than the hub of a boat trailer.
Boat Trailer Hub: Soak bearings in saltwater under pressure (3-4 or more feet deep) then tow for hundreds of miles bearing thousands of pounds....
Depends on the fee you are charging, John --
CorrosionX on the axle shaft and knob.
For me, either Yamaha or Penn Blue lightly applied on any gears, clicker, etc.
But I would use a 24K gold applicator brush -- with Argentinian free-market fur from wild voles -- then just put the grease in a plastic leader case -- with the label clearly showing "Orvis Ltd" -- as you snap a photo for your client.
Should be able to get $150 for that service.
Best,
Fred
Yamaha Blue.
Cal's on the drags.
I have used other wheel bearing grease and the Yamaha just seems to clean up better when you are servicing.

Nice Fred.
I love fishing in the high country and some Dude will come along with 200 dry flys and not a Caddis or nymph pattern in his box.......
Yeah,
I just have a dozen I take with me.
6 nymphs -- 6 black ants.
Usually never lose any.
Catches anything swimming in the High Country.
Still have a plastic jar with 349 parts for you.
Best,
Fred

You know, it is a good point Fred....
It's one thing to service a $1200 Stella with over 200 individual parts....but a Fly Reel....man, you really must have money to burn to waste it on what is really the simplest thing imaginable...and that you don't even use to play most trout other than something to store line on while you use your hand for a drag washer...I used to think my old Pfluegers were overkill lol.
Now, fly rods on the other hand....they can be magic wands....:D

Sounds just about like my box Fred.
Do you have a couple minutes for me tonite or tomorrow night?
I don't want to intrude on short notice.
Hey John ,
I still fish old Medalists for the majority of my fly fishing John. Not much better that I have found than a 1494 DA.
And if you think fly reels are just somewhere to store line you need to come with me to Lake Almanor in a couple of weeks for the Hex Hatch.
Bring on the 7-15 lb German Browns!
Probably tomorrow night, Jon --
Still cutting brush today -- trying to get it done before we get more rain.
And cleaning a lot of Penn parts.
I need to be in Fresno tommorow morning.
So will be back tomorrow evening.
We can get together then depending on your schedule.
I used to deer hunt around Lake Almanor every year -- Archery.
Always stayed in Chester.
Best,
Fred
Tomorrow it is then.
Two Uncles and myself got Grandpas old cabin on the west shore in Prattville.
Still some of the most Epic lake fishing in California.
Still some Huge Deer!
Ill call you tomorrow afternoon and see how things look.
Best,
JT

Rainbow Lodge??? My friends stayed there every year__rifle season.
TomT
Can't recall the name of the motel.
But it was pretty old -- and kind of on the outskirts of town on the West shore.
They let us have a BBQ out on the lawn every evening.
And it was pretty cheap.
Nice country.
Best,
Fred
That has to be the Plumas Pines Resort and Marina Fred.
It is still there, Grandpa's cabin is about 150 yards to the north.
One of my favorite places on Earth.
We take the little ones down to the resort to get a pop or ice cream after dinner.
I have had a charge account there since I was 12 or 13 years old. As kids we got to spend the whole summer with only a very indulgent Grand mother as supervision.
Grandpa and Dad would come up from the Bay area on the weekends. I learned to drive both cars and boats during those summers and learned to sail as well.
Grandma used to send us in to Chester for groceries when I was about 14 or so.
Ah the Good Old Days!
Sorry for the thread highjack GF714 ;D
I don't think he/she would mind......September 2 of 2009 was a long time ago......
I'm just saying.................
;D Okay so let me put us back on track...Cals on the Drag system and Yamaha Blue on the interior gears and parts, 321 for the spool bearings. "Alan"
Hey guys,
Need to order some new lube. Going to be servicing a few of my reels. So exactly what oil, gear lube and drag grease should I purchase. I only have Shimano reel oil & Shimano star drag grease. These are over 10 years old so I need to re-order before starting the servicing.
Please let me know EXACTLY which type of oil, gear grease and drag grease to purchase.
There seem to be a bunch of different Cal's and Penn Lube. Photos or links would be great !!
Thank You,
M

Its very simple:
1. Marine Bearing Grease for gears and general protection. A lot of different flavors, all are good as long as they are for marine use.
2. Cal's regular for drags, Cal's light if you are going to be fishing in very cold weather.
3. Corrosion-x oil for general oil needs (handles, knobs etc)
4. TSI-321 for spool bearings when you want ultimate speed.

The oil & grease you have will be good to use. If the grease has separated a little, stirring it up to remix it will be ok. The oil in a container is ok too. When you want to replace the grease & oil I would use the Penn blue grease or Yamaha Marine Grease which can be bought on Ebay.Make sure you order MARINE GREASE. Cal's drag grease is the way to go for the CF drags. Penn oil is good for general lubrication as is synthetic motor oil. For spool bearings 321 synthetic is the way to go.
Thanks Guys. Haven't located any 321 yet, but there are a bunch of types of corrosion X. Should I get the reel?
I used to use Corrosion X all the time but have found that Boesshield T-9 to be much better. We used it in the USAF all the time on munitions. Would that work?

Reel-x is a little faster than Corrosion-X if you want it for bearings only. You can find the little bottle of Corrosion-x that has a nice applicator tip.
You can get TSI-321 from Dawn at Smoothdrag or from Penn Parts.
If you need something quick and TS 321 isnt readily available, I've been using Super Slick Stuff. marine use approved, non-petroleum based so it wont gum up and it's pretty darn fast, faster than Hot Sauce or Corrosion Block based on my limited testing.
John
What should the reel parts be cleaned and soaked with before installing and lubrication? I would be using in our home, so please don't tell diesel or something :-)
Thanks,
M
I use IPA (isopropyl alcohol) - in a container in an ultrasonic bath - some use lighter fuel or carb cleaner

Try a household degreaser like Simple Green in a bowl, soak a while then scrub with a small stiff brush. I do it in the kitchen sink then rinse with hot water. Then dump it down the drain & rinse the sink.
It depends on what the parts have on them for me....and you always have to be mindful to use plastic safe stuff if there is any present.
Old dirty grease I use Simple Green or even Windex or Dawn detergent. If it's a part I don't need to remove just scrub it with a toothbrush soaked with Corrosion-X <-- this will cut the old gummy grease and remove surface corrosion very well.
