Hi guys
Recently I acquired an Albacore Special 280. Great piece of equipment. I was wondering if the CS501 and PG255 are the same physical size as the AS280.
Can anyone help me? Basically want to know if they are narrower than the AS280.
There is absolutely nothing wrong with the reel but am looking to see if there is a narrower option in the ProGear range.
I look forward to your responses.
PS: If I can find a narrower PG then I may sell the AS280 on this board. It has only been used once by me and by all reports it was never used by the previous owner. I also installed carbontex drags when I got it.
Cheers
Brad
Hello Brad,
Overall the PG 255 is a smaller reel than the PG 280. ID of the 280 frame is approx 1 5/8" whereas the ID of the PG 255 frame is approx. 1 3/8". Also, my 255 with line weights 19 oz and my 280 with line weights 23 oz. The little info I have on the 501 states without line it weights 18 oz and it came with a gear ratio of 6.0:1. Also, the 280 came with a gear ratio of 6.0:1 and the 255 came with a gear ratio of 5.0:1 but can be lowered to a gear ratio of 4.0:1.

Hi John
That's great. What about the overall height of the reel. Is the 280 taller?
Cheers
Brad
Brad,
Yes, the 280 is a little taller. The gear box is much larger in the 280.
John
Last question...(maybe) so, are the cs501 and PG255 the same dimensions or is the 255 smaller?
I'll take a pic of the reels side by side when I get back to California
Thanks Bryan
Hi Brian
Is there a list out there that shows all the Penn parts that fit Pro Gear reels?. It would be a great list to have, any ideas?.
Joel

Gunmetal is an AS280, gold is a PG255, and aluminum is a CS500 (similar to a CS501 except not as polished)
Hi Bryan
That sure does show that the AS280 is much larger than the 255 and 501
thanks for the photos.

I think the CS501 Is the smaller of the group with a 1 7/16" frame I.D. I have a year on mine and love it.
