Title: Zombies are coming- you have to run and can only take 3 reels with you!!!
Post by: Joel.B on November 04, 2012, 06:27:05 PM
The gun forums are choked with these threads- "ZOMBIE APOCALYPSE!!, WHAT'S YOUR GUN?"

What would be the 1911, Remington 870, M1 Garand of reels?

If you can only have three reels, which three and why?

I have not owned a whole bunch of reels like most of you probably have. Though I can always predict which guns would be mentioned in the Zombie/gun threads, no idea which reels have top reputations as proven rugged and reliable.

I would take the Kalashnikov of baitcasters with me, my red Amb 5500.

A 4/0 tank, a open top 20 size caster (TLD, Sealine SHV add all) and my Pflueger large arbor with all my spools!

If you let me take a 4th, I'd grab a 300 sized spinner.

Good call Morten - that's a pretty accurate metaphor.
The first two are easy, the last more of a toss-up:

- Ambassadeur

there is a reel I have seen around my whole life and I never once handled one or know anything about them.

Salt-friendly?  How much drag and what kind of gears can you get?

To be the AK47 of reels is really saying something.

Alright, I'll admit, I'm kind of a prepper. The only issue with this list, as much as I LOVE all the choices, is that the majority of fishing in a "ZOMBI APOCALYPSE" will be in shore off the rocks or in streams, I think the 112H is just a bit to big to be the smallest reel.

Depends on how big the zombies are,I don't plan on eating them just a little catch and release from the rooftops.BRAINS anyone.

Joel, you didn't mention which reels you would grab as you are running out the door. ;)

I based my salt water reel choice on versatility and simplicity/ease of maintenance.  I'm a Penn conventional star drag guy so I chose a "99" width Tiburon framed jigmaster and a double dogged, 1+7 drag, narrow Tib framed 114H.  I think they'll handle my salt water needs.  Besides, I just like them. ;D
(http://i1162.photobucket.com/albums/q523/rumbum01/P1010433.jpg)

Most of my fishing is in fresh water and I always use very small spinners.  One that holds about 100 yds of #4 mono will do, so I chose a Mitchell 310X paired with a 5-6 ft light action rod.

My wife, who likes fishing more than I do, chose her Penn 320gt2 and Mitchell 308X.  She said two reels are enough. ::)

QuoteI think the 112H is just a bit too big to be the smallest reel.
My reasoning as well Ron (I also have a 112H 'Tank') - hence the Abu.
Joel, the 5500/6500 Swedish-made Abus are great little reels - high quality and eminently upgradeable.
They don't mind a bit of water exposure either - I fish mine off the paddle board with 20lb braid (and 5-7lbs drag) and rate it pretty highly.
In terms of durability, I have a ~30-year-old 6500C (Ultra Cast) that runs smoother than my new one.
Cheers, Justin

If we were only bringing reels and no parts, I would be comfortable with these;
They would pretty much cover everything.
the 9/0 is almost as heavy as the 6/0, just 2oz over.
Sorry couldn't make my mind up with the smaller reels, it would be a Surfmaster 100 or the 650SS.
Most guts on the conventionals are ss, they're also double dogged except the 100, but the dog and sleeve are ss.

Well all that saltwater gear is something but with no end of the world secret store of gas, your boats will be tombs.  I'd have to take 3 Abu 4500C's for fresh and inshore. One to use and two for parts reels.  Oh and a Ruger Vaquaro .45 long colt....

"Joel, you didn't mention which reels you would grab as you are running out the door."

Well I'd have to grab the 113h YTS tank I have been slaving over- if only because I'd hate to leave  it unfinished, but I imagine it will be a pretty good piece of kit when done.

I'd grab Granpa's old Mitchell 300

and the Squidder 146 that I have also been slaving over.

So two unfinished projects and an old spinning reel.  Hopefully the zombies cannot swim and i'd be safe to tinker away on my secret Island.

What a beautiful baby the red one in the middle, is that a modified Peen?

Great question!

Here are my picks:

Penn 650ss w/30lb braid.  Put me in a kayak with this reel and I could inshore troll and bottom fish to feed my family

Penn 113HLW w/60lb mono.  Paired with a 13' Ulua rod, I could fish from shore while cooking my meals and defending the beachfront compound.  It could also serve double duty on the kayak for hanging live bait.

And then finally your Vintage Ambassador 6500... So I'll have something to throw at you when you've turned into a zombie. :D :D  ;D

Yes Morten, it has been modified, it also has some goodies in the inside.
The reel itself is a Penn 113HL standard, it is 1/4" wider than the 113HN (Narrow), the red spool is standard on some, it was in production only for a couple of years.
A couple of other features are:
Accurate ss helical cut 4:1 gears
ss sleeve and yoke
ss dogs (2)
1+5 Carbontex drags
Tiburon topless frame, with the  recessed sides so the plates slide in, creating one unit
ss handle with the Ultimate Jigging knob.
Some here know that I like red spools, I've been trying to find a new or in excellent shape spool for my 501...no luck.
Take care, Sal

Not the zombies I have to deal with, they are meth adicts.

I never thought of putting a reel in my ditch bag.  Whre I'm at I'd probably have to find a small spinner to take....does a 10 fathom herring gill net count?  I know it will catch trout.

Very interesting thread.
I'm for one who travel and sail into uncharted water all the time with very short notice.
Reel wise, I usually go with my Penn 16vsx and a cheap seahawk 103(for bait fish).
My optional third reel that goes in-between will be my Alutecnos 8v. Optional meaning if the flight carrier provided by my client allow me to carry 30kg check-in.

Grab & Go??
I would have to go Heavy, Medium & Light to cover all bases...

2 Speed ~ (TLD30 II) 40# line and up...
Toro 60 ~ Covers a lot of bases and casts well (10# to 30# line if needed)
Light Spinner ~ 1000 size for the little guys...   (2# to 8# lines)

Im ready, lets do this!!!    (not)...  LOL    ;D

I've been rethinking this whole zombie thing and I'm revising my list.  If it was truly the end of civilization as we know it :o then I would head up into north eastern Nevada where I know the country and the distance is less than a tank of gas from my house.  I don't know how long I would survive :-\ but my chances are better than if I headed in another direction.  I wouldn't need a heavy conventional reel, since I would probably never see the ocean again. :(  All of my fishing will be for trout, so, along with some weapons of semi-mass destruction, ;) I would grab my old Mitchell 300 and two smaller spinners.  They will suffice until I expire. ;D

Have a nice day :-*

Funny topic, I have gotten better at being able go bring less. I still own more than practical, but am able to bring what I need for the target species, not every scenario that may happen. That being said, I probably still bring too much gear. I dont need it all every time but it would be hard to part with it.
Tight Lines, Brendan.

1) Tranx PG - can surf cast, jig, bottom fish, , troll, sabiki etc.  If the level wind breaks, I can take it off and still use the reel.
2) Torque 9 - Can troll with or cast for tuna, waterproof and minimal parts. If I could ransack Shimano spare parts warehouse I would take the Stella instead but otherwise TRQ9
3) Tiburon SST50 - I don't own this yet but I will soon I think :), trolling zombie heads for anything of 400-1200#

No small spinner but I can make bait with the Tranx

It's always good to know if you want to catch zombies you have to follow the same premise of fishing,GO WHERE THE BAIT IS,the cities. But on the other hand if you want to survive the zombie apocalypse go to the most barren areas on the planet. No bait no fish no brains no zombies :P

I don't know much about the other two reels, but that 750SS should do just fine, I know the guy that worked on it ;).

Aslo, I'm going to need to exchange one of my reels that I mentioned above, I forgot all about shelter. I will need my 16/0 to use as a winch to raise logs for my log cabin ;).

Sal,

The PG255 is essentially a squidder size reel with jigmaster guts and the PG545 is between a 1/0 and a 2/0 reel (I think, I dont have any on hand to compare) with 4/0 guts.

Hence, I love these reels because of the simplicity of a Penn Reel, solid aluminum frame and sideplate (only one), perfect for braided line (way ahead of it's time), and the drags to back them up.

The 750SS, well, that's a long/short story.  The guy I got this from...well, no words or pictures can completely describe this guy.  All I can say is I'm priviledged to know him.  I know he is humble in his own way, and that is why he shall remain my secret Santa.  ;)

It has got to be an Abu 6500CS Rocket - the lovely blue one with the wide spacer bars - and a matched pair of Penn International II 130ST tricked out for black marlin and/or giant bluefin. Then, as our poor misguided dead people stop to admire the lovely little Abu, a quick swipe with the 130s and 'off with their heads'  :D

Bad question  ???

I would take two Quick Dam spinners, 2002 and 3002. (Excellent to fish with and high in value I suppose).
The third one would most likely by Ambassadeur 5500 or 6500 CS rocket.

preppers seem to be forgetting that you do not need fuel to go offshore. Hell, mankind has been fishing offshore in dugouts and under sail for probably 10,000 years or more.

I've been albie fishing off of sailboats plenty of times, under sail you make 6kts, perfect for trolling and zero fuel :D.

Baja Special, Penn Torque 5 (spinner) and a Saltiga 30T will handle pretty much anything in salt that is real table fare until the Mutant Tuna take over :D.
