Post by: turboal on October 25, 2009, 10:20:50 PM
Alan, can i use the penn blue on the drag washers on my
penn 20 & 30 int.and the bearings ? or do i need to get

Hi there turboal!
My 2 cents worth: I wouldn't use Penn blue grease on carbon fibre drag washers as it is petroleum based. Rather use Cal's, Shimano TBM grease or any PTFE/Teflon based bicycle grease. Penn grease is fine for bearings, gears, etc.
Good luck.

Thanks Alan, I have Cal's so i will use it on the drags.
These have the original drag washers.I already repacked all
the bearings with penn blue. just need to get the seals back on.
and put it back togeather and the 30T is done. the 50 is next.

your internationals have the woven ht-100 drag material, not the old composite material, right?

Don't know. how can i tell them apart ? this drag washer has
a diamond pattern on it and screws on with 4 screws. i think
it's the original. this reel is a weird one. it says 30T on frame.
but it is a 2-spd. it has a 5/16 or so spacer on the right side.
I could not find it listed anywhere. i am starting to think it
was converted from a standard 1 speed reel.
By the way i got the frame back. Thanks again for you effort.
and sorry for the agg.

if the drag washer is made of a woven material, your're good.  sounds like you have a cal's 2-speed conversion.  very nice!  alan

definitely a cal's conversion with a penn ht-100 drag washer.  you've got a real gem!

i use simple green and water mixed together to clean old grease and dirt but i do freshwater reels. im not as educated on saltwater reels as Alan tani is however and he may be able to advise a better method then i. but for what its worth i hope it helps.  ;) ;D

usually an old rag is enough to "raise the grain" so to speak.  once you do that, you can slap on a coat of cal's grease and the wipe off the excess.  i've been amazed at how well even the grungiest ht-100's will work with a little cleaning.
