Title: Wrong pawl for Penn 320GTI
Post by: mirkee on February 17, 2013, 07:41:27 PM
I ordered two new levelwind pawls for my 320GTIs.  I received the wrong ones.  Actually, I ordered the wrong ones.  The two little ears on the pawls I received are wider than the shaft and they don't fit into the pawl cilinder.  I ran into a bulletin from Penn online saying that they had upgraded the levelwind machanism somewhere along the line and some parts were now different.  They said that the way to tell the old 320's from the new ones is that the old ones have a plastic line guide, new ones metal.  I have the old ones.  The part # 47-975 only fits the new ones.  Looks like I'll have to file (Dremmel?) the two pawls to make them fit the levelwind mechanism (PITA).  I believe the old part is 47-320 (?).  When looking at a parts schematic on the Penn website is shows the 47-975, which leads to the above mentioned problem.  Beware if replacing your pawls.

Yea, I see this fairly frequently. My recommendation is to go ahead and replace the old plastic line guide with a new metal one. My concern is that filing down the pawl must be done very precisely or it will not seat correctly on the worm and will lead to premature failure.
