Title: Stacking multiple Carbontex drag washers
Post by: eric on March 12, 2013, 10:01:55 AM
Hi all,

I am cleaning up an old Tatler brand overhead reel.
I was hoping to replace the original (unknown) fibre drag washers with greased Carbontex washers.

Problem is that the original washers are just under 3mm thick and the Carbontex washer sheeting is 1mm.
Can I replace the original thick fibre washers with 'stacks' of 2-3 greased Carbontex washers?

I cant really find any good 'substitute' for the original drag washers.

Appreciate your assistance.

Regards Eric

Yes it will work.   If I had an accurate drawing I could cut some thinner metal washers and you could add washers to the stack.

Hi Irish Jigger and Keta.

Problem solved! I ended up sticking with the original  3 + 1 drag configuration. Soaked and totally cleaned the original fibre and metal washers in methylated spirit.
Then applied a very thin coat of Cals grease to the fibre washers. I also replaced the fibre washer under the main gear with a greased Carbontex washer.

I now have the smoothest Tatler drag ever. There is no more of that jerky or lumpy drag that Tatlers were renown for.

Now to do all the other reels.

Thanks for your assistance.

Regards
Eric
