Here is my 112h hotrodded. Alternating SS dogs(thanks Tom), SS gear sleeve thanks to the man himself Alan. The 112h narrow kit from Greg. Acid wrap rod from blacK pearl(alan). 5:1 accurate gears. Nice balanced setup. Just hoping for some other things to come about(like the SS gears in hex or the drop in insert). Really like the way this one turned out.

Thanks for any input.

I forgot to thank all here for the ideas and inspiration to do this. Without this forum I would be fishing out of the box reels and not being so involved with the sport.

Very nice Bob. My birthday is in several months. ;D
Nice! I just put mine on a 20lb acid wrapped rod and will be testing it out of Charelston, OR for a few days.
I won't be able to fish it until this fall. My wife had some major surgery last week and I'll need to stay close to home. So the plan is to fish th NE canyons and hope the weatherand fish gods smile on us this year. Maybe some albacore. This would be killer on them. Really like the Tib narrow on this reel.
very nice
Beautiful! I'm in the process of building my first tank (113h) but I think that a 112 will be the next one. Your pics are definitely inspiring!
/Karl
I don't think this can be considered a true tank though. Maybe just a narrow on steroids. I think tiburon makes a narrow with a closed frame not open like this one. Anyone know about that???
I have a 99 width non open top Tib 112H frame and spool.
Very nice reel. I would rather have the topless frame, especially on a reel this size. The top crossbar tends to get in the way. Bob
Very nice....
really very nice, thanks for sharing...
Looks good....
Will the reel clamp be an issue with the trigger seat on the rod?
I won't be clamping it. I know, I know... I have always thought the same thing. I caught YFT's to about 60# and haven't had any issues to date. I'm always cranking down on it though. Tha real problem is if you want to use the rail for leverage it can be a pita.
I never use a clamp either, is that your first spiral wrap?
My second one. The first I use for stripers and blues. This one is for tuna. So I have not really had the test of a BIG fish on a spiral wrapped rod yet. I hope this year I can get lucky enough to test it out.
I am thinking about this. I have an old 112h.
How much drag could you safely fish on this?
I guess without the Alan Tani bridge it would still
only be about eight pounds. Are there stainless bridges
still available for this reel?
I think Alan still has the gears sleeve. The drag is the same as the jigmaster. I think #12 to#15 is what you may be able to get out of it. I haven't tested it though. Im hoping that there is a hex gear and or insert on the horizon. This would increase the drag to theoretically to #25. For that amount you will also need SS gears to help prevent gear failure.

I've caught some sizable kingies on my spiral wrap , I prefer spiral now . I think I've posted this link to the rod I use before, http://www.fishing.net.nz/asp_forums/synit-deepshot-seriola-tackle-tester-review_topic62925.html

I have a few
octagon inserts for the 500/112H finished now.
Pm sent.
I figure that the stainless gears and bridge are key to getting any appreciable drag increase (after the frame is upgraded).
I'm new to this. What are octagon inserts?
They are a piece of metal with the outside dimensions of a eared washer and a octagonal ID, the 500/112H insert uses 3 Penn 60 keyed washers. I just put the first 112HN mini tank (Bradley?) with the octagon insert together to see how it fit and will try to take it apart and post photos later today.
If this works 60, 113H, 349H and 114H inserts will be cut.
Bridges are drawn but I need to buy a TIG welder to properly make them....Or are you confusing bridges with gear sleeves?

"Edited as per Moderators to correct Scott's Bait & Tackle over to their new store name Mystic Reel Parts / www.mysticparts.com"
I tested my 112HN Bradly and for the first 3 or 4 pulls it was doing over 20lbs, then it started acting like a Yugo and the drag dropped to 4lbs. When I took it apart the CF washers had rounded off and were turning with the keyed washers. I was using modified Penn HT-100 Jigmaster washers, I'll order some Carbontex an see if they work better. I put it back together stock and it's giving me 15lbs.
Lee, when you say modified do you mean with fiberglass in the middle?
Check "experimenting with 113h drags", I've been there already with those.
I was using standard HT100's and failed miserably.
The last test I did, I got over 35lb with the 114H and the drags did just fine.
Dawn doesn't have sheets reinforced with fiberglass, the info where I got them from is above.
The seller has from .75mm to 1.20mm, maybe even more, I don't remember.
That reel is inspiring!
Sal/Lee, just ordered up the cf in1.00 and1.10 given the metal washers that are now available what is the best size and stack config?

I'll check the thickness of the metal washers but I'm thinking just 3. I have some .035" SS I can cut some out of.
So basically with the cf washer being cut in a hex shape...then the only other washers would be the SS washers round/ keyed to the gear shaft, right? So in the bottom of the main gear would be a cf-hex, then SS round, then cf-hex, then SS round, then cf-hex and finally a SS round on top. This would be a 3 + 1(under main gear cf)as it is right now...right? What rod you think needs to be done to add one more cf-hex then SS round. I would be willing to order up the thinnest reinforced cf sheet. Which I think was either 0.8 or 0.5 and give it a go if you would be willing to cut the washers or direct me where to get a thinner set of washers.whats your thoughts?
Bob
Put a 18-505 Bellville on top of the stack.
I'll draw up a 60 keyed washer it to the cutter if the stock washers are thicker than .035". I measured the clearance between the gear and the side plate hopping I could make the adapter taller but there was not much room.
I would leave it at 3+1. That's plenty of horse power already.
Try to get 1.20mm reinforced carbon sheets. I don't believe the metal washers need to be that thin, but it doesn't matter.
So with the 3 + 1 it should get #25 or more in theory?
Lets weit for the parts and see, we can adjust from there.
The baja gets 27 with 4, I got over 30 with my 6/0.
Very exciting stuff here. I just need to order up the 1.20 cf material. Already ordered 1.0 and 1.10. I should have just ordered all the sizes right outta gate. Can't hurt to have toooo much cf material around for experimenting can it?
Bob, you need to stop spending money ;D. If you already have the 1mm or 1.10mm, those would probably do, we need to test it and see. Lee mentioned that his washers failed, I asked him if those were reinforced with fiberglass, but I haven't received an answer yet :-\.
Sal I know....just ask my wife. Right now I have no less then 6 reel projects going at once. I , at least in my mind, keep over thinking these reels. Right now I have a jones to go fishing but need to keep close to home for medical reasons. So at least working on them gives somewhat of a relief. Kinda like cabin fever on steroids. The cf washers will eventually be used and I'm currently not spending any cash on food, fuel or bait. Any way. If I was to calculate exactly what some of these older penn have cost that is a little sick.

They were stock Penn HT-100 that appeared to have reinforcing. Thicker material will help.
