Hello.
Aaron and I are in the final stages in completing a 5 stack drag kit for the reels listed. Preliminary tests is that the kit is capable of providing 25# of drag. One proble we are finding is that the under gear washer is not holding up very well under such pressure. I am goin to do a drafg run test where I'll be tying the line to the bumper of my car and drive 50 yard at 15# of drag and inspect, then 18# of drag and inspect, then 20# of drag and inspect, then 23# of drag, and last 25# of drag. Will advise of the results.
Note that this will be going way beyond the limits of these reels, so caution should be taken.
Bryan
So, Bryan brings up a point that is a great entry for a question I've had for a long time. Has anyone ever seen a Newell base fail due to too much drag? I think a mini-Tank could handle 100 pounds of drag and not be fased but what about Newell stands and bars? Can you run a 112H with a full Newell kit and stainless double dogged everything at 20#? That would let you fish as much as 80# line but it would make 60 easily available.
So how much drag will a Newell base take?
Thanks
Ron
I dunno?? Sounds like you need to send it to Bryan so he can drag it behind his car :)
Noyb72.. Seems like 60 or 80 is way too much to ask of a 3/0 or jigmaster. Even if the sus gears, sleeve & aftermarket frame hold up, the spoolshaft, plastic sideplate and bridge may not..
On that size, I don't believe we need to worry about the inner parts, the graphite would blow up at that setting.
I really want to know its capabilities and limitations
Seriously, you would most likely be able to fish 60#. Your talking about 20# of drag at full spool, right? You can almost get that without a lot of mod. Even at 20# it feels heavy though. It'll be interesting to see what Bryan comes up with. I would love to see a video of those tests :o :o
Video? I need a go pro
Never mind the video, just make sure you have protection on, we need you around here.
I am getting 24 lb out of standard CFs on Newell 300s. I recently pulled 24 on a Newell 338 with new drags. I then put it on a 80 lb rod and lifted a 20 lb dumbbell and this was one of the older no letter Newells with a graphite base. The stainless in the moldings came out later. The reel held up just fine with my test.
Good Luck with your test.
After a second thought, maybe I should be securing the rod as I drive away just in case the reel goes boom. I nor do I want anyone else to get hurt.
I have no doubt that lock down the reel will hold, but on a run with 15, 18, 20 or 25# of drag is another story.
