Title: CAN THESE BE ADAPTED TO FISHING REELS?
Post by: Dominick on June 07, 2013, 04:10:14 PM
Some of you engineering types might find these magnetic screws interesting and adaptable for fishing reels.  Imagine a fishing reel with no sign of screws holding it together.  Check out this link.  http://www.wimp.com/invisiblescrew/ Dominick

I hope not.  Can you imagine if the screws are corroded and seized?

Yes I thought about that.  If they were grease protected it might not be a problem.

If some of the screws have reversed threading it might cause troubles  :P

Pretty neat stuff but quality stainless doesn't have very good, if any, magnetic properties. Not sure what material you could use for saltwater applications.

Good thinking.  I didn't think of SS.  It's fun to sit around and muse.  Dominick

A bit off topic but when I saw the application for these screws I thought of traditional japanese wood joinery, not that they are similar in any way, but how our modern way of thinking makes us think that everything must be solved with technology. If you want to join wood to wood almost invisibly, you don't need screws or magnets, you just need to be an apprentice to a japanese master woodworker for 10-15 years!  ;D

I really like the keyhole mortise. Royal PITA to chop out and technically not as strong as an English joint but absolutely tight and rigid when done correctly.
