Title: Los Cabos Father's Day Week Fishing Trip with Dominick!
Post by: El Pescador on June 14, 2013, 09:33:17 PM
IF you like Hot Weather!  Hot Fishing!  and Hot Salsa!
You need to be here in Los Cabos, BCS with Dom (Pescachaser), his lifelong Friend, Joe, and me (El Pescador!)

We are at the old El Presidente - Los Cabos  (now the Holiday Inn) and is it nice!  Really NICE!

First day, we are fishing before Day Break, now don't laugh, we are 5 minutes from the harbor / boat slip and into fish, I had no time to put on a hat, sunglasses or sunscreen!  But FISH ON!! and it took me once around the boat!  Nice way to start the day.

Dom & Joe have been fishing for many years, and this is just another fishing trip in a lifetime of outdoor adventures!

If you look closely, Dom is fishing on one of days many Roosterfish WITH THE TANK!
and from my observation, its performance can be summed up in two words...  FLAW  LESS!!!!!

One of Joe's many catches of day.

Then it happened!!!  the BIG fish of the day in on, and what a fight for Dom and his TANK!!!!
NO rail here to help get leverage on the fish, no, just the Old Man and the Sea.  Dom and the Tank against the BIG one of the day!!!!

Near the end of the battle, Dom has the TANK's Star drag spun all the way down tight, and when the fish saw the panga, it took off on a 50 yrd. run

but the battle ended with the largest roosterfish I have been in any photo, and the Panga Capt. Sergio, thought the fish was around the 55 - 60 lbs., but please members, please let me know what you think of this fish and his size estimate. The Monster Roosterfish was photographed and enjoyed, then Dom sent the fish over the side in a face plant into the warm Pacific Waters to live on and fight another day.

Here's Joe loaded up and in gear with yet another Roosterfish

what a beautiful Baja coastline!!!

Back at the dock, at the fish cleaning station, we are able to see what others caught during the day, here some nice sized Amberjacks!

And at day's end, to enjoy an ice-cold Cerveza, can life get any better than this????

That is it for now, we will be back on the water tomorrow, will post more if the Fishing Gods allow!!!
Get out there, fish hard, pull harder, FISH ON!!!!!

El Pescador!

Great pictures. Looks like fun. Can't wait until tomorrow to see what you guys get. Is that the same joe that Dominick had in the pictures at the jersey shore? Somehow he looks a lot happier there ::)

That is the same Joe photographed at the Jersey Shore! Maybe happier because he has 4 more cigars in his pocket!
Looking towards a great day of fishing here in Baja!

Great pictures Wayne, thank you for posting.
Dominick that's the most beautiful fish I've ever seen, I already downloaded it to my screensaver, nice job buddy ;).
Wayne , that monster is definitely not 55lb, my guestimate is at around 65lb.
Keep them coming boys. ;) Man, I wish I was there with you guys.

I've always wanted to know too.  I think they are in the same family as the jacks, and if so, they probably taste delicious.

If you know what you're doing you can guff a fish at the right spot and still release him unharmed.
Looks like that's what they did here.

Only the panga Capt. gaffed the fish, and Serigo said Roosterfish were on the same short list of quality eating fish as tuna & dorado, he said his wife fries them.  He kept Roosterfish under 20 lbs. because they do taste good.

Fish over that size do not taste good & are called "black meat", as the larger fish do have dark meat, not pink red meat of the smaller fish.

We are not keeping any Roosterfish for our personal consumption.

Sal:  After we estimated the weight we went to look at Rooster fish records.  The record for this species is 114 lbs.  Looking at both fish and fish in the 100 lbs class they don't look much different.  I hefted it with Sergio and it was pretty heavy.  We have to stay with a conservative estimate for credibility.  Dominick

That is a quality Rooster, not the biggest I've seen caught (75lbs, Panama). It's got the length but is not as fat as others I've seen.

I'd give it a SOLID 65lbs, but regardless, a trophy of a lifetime.

Way to go guys, thats a good way to start a trip.

There are a few things I'd like to know and first two have to do with color.

First, the two jacks at the dock look a little light to be amber jacks are you sure they are not almaco jacks? There almost the same except for color, almaco's are more siliver.

Second, the Modelo seem the wrong color too, you guys need some Negra Modelo's ;)

Lastly, the reports comming to the states say Mexico did not print enough fishing licenses and no places have them now. I PM'ed Pesca about this before he left and just wondering if you found this to be true? I head to Loreto Sunday for a tourney and got my Mexican license here in the states so I'm covered, I'm just wondering what the deal is?

We're back, and HAVE LOTS of photos for new postings, just need to get back to work, and will try to post this weekend after Dom and I swap photos from each of our cameras!  I think  you will like these shots!

While walking around the fish cleaning tables, and we quizzed the fishermen, and they said, "Amberjacks", and that just might be a colloquial term for many Amberjack species.  don't know.

Your choice of Modelo color tells me you have a cast iron stomach!  For me, Modelo Especial tastes great on a very hot day!

RE: Mexican Fishing Licenses, Dom and I purchased a One Year License, but at the Harbor (Purerto Los Cabos) a young lady was there to sell you a Day's license for $17 US, but per our Panga Capt. Serigo, fishing was Free on Monday since she was not there to sell licenses.  Things are very casual in Mexico compared to the USA.  We starting fishing on Monday without ice, and the Capt. said, "Monday, NO ICE!".

Dan, the rod with the blue grips was a Penn 30 -50 lbs. line class with a Shimano TLD 25 Reel, I don't rememeber the model number, I used a Calstar Grafighter Model 700M, 20 - 50 lbs. line class with a Shimano TLD 30 2 speed reel, loved using this rod, flexible tip and one heck of a back bone!

OK!  Were back, with new photos for you all, hope you enjoy the show!

First morning, Dom and I were enjoying coffee on his veranda, watching a surf fisherman catch Roosterfish, when two pangas arrived, then 20 minutes later, the entire flotilla, under full power, is heading for the same spot!  Like a hungry pack of hyenas, when one is catching, all want to catch!

Here is our Larger-than-a-super-panga, very nice boat, with a very quiet 115 hp. Honda engine.

and when you are catching Roosterfish of this size, it ALWAYS puts a smile on your face!  Nice one Joe!

Here is a small Roosterfish, compared to what we caught for 3 days, again the smile when your catching!

You want some fun, catch a 50 lbs. baby Marlin!  This fish jumped 20-25 times out of the water, and still feisty for the photo, then it was released to fight another day.

We did look to fish out of Palmilla, but opted for Puerto Los Cabos, interesting note here, to get to your boat and back, they do a beach launch, and when the surf is high, it's quite a ride!

Second day of fishing, Dom getting the locals to "loose a few buttons!"

Here is some SERIOUS Coinage just to go Roosterfishing!

And I would like to thank George  (George4741) for sending me 3 washers to make this Penn 349H a fantastic reel for Roosterfish Catching, the 3+1 CF drags worked GREAT but now I'm going to upgrade to a 5+1 drag system.  With Alan's new 5/0 handle, and 40 lbs. string, it was a perfect setup!  Thanks ALL!

Speaking of maintained reels, the Mexican Captains do not keep their gear in any sense of good working condition, my recommendation, BRING YOUR OWN REELS, and if you have space, rods as well.

AND THEN it happened!  Dom is into 150 lbs. Marlin on the TANK!!!  What a 25-minute fight!  But you already know the ending, Dom and the TANK win!!!!

After watching the performance of this Reel TANK, and if you do any inshore or offshore fishing for fish up to 200 lbs., get the parts and make a TANK for yourself!
What A fishing Machine!

More postings later!!!

Get out on the water, Fish HARD, Pull HARDER!!!

Wayne: Terrific job.  Thanks for doing that.  You are now my embedded photographer.   :D  Joel I think the rings were powder coated, you'll have to ask Sal about that.  BTW I sent the Tank back to Sal. He wanted to take it apart and check out the guts after that work out.  He will do a report when he gets done.  I want to thank Sal and the other guys who contributed to making the Tank what it is.  You all can't imagine the fun I had bringing those fish with the tank.  Besides what you saw the Tank probably handled another 10-15 more Rooster fish.  Sal is going to push it a little more and I will use it during the Tuna Tournament in November.  Dominick

Excellent report, Wayne! I couldn't have asked for a better group of guys to put the Tank to the test. Thank you so much for posting, I really enjoyed the visual play-by-play (you could have kept the one with Dominick's open shirt to yourself... ;))
Dominick, thanks to you also for taking a chance with the Tank! You really gave it a workout, that's what I was looking for. Thanks too, for your willingness to send it back to me so that I could take a look inside. I took the tank completely apart to check it and everything looks and works as the day I assembled it. There were a couple of small issues; I will post them on "the 113H reel/tank" page when I get a chance. Congratulations guys, looks like it was the perfect Father's Day present!

Well, Book it Dann-O!!!

Dom will be back in Cabo the second week of November (for the WON Tuna Tournament) , and I'll be back the third week of January 2014, put it on your calendar and make it happen!

If you have any questions, direct them to Dom, he has boots-on-the-ground and eyes-on-the-horizon RECON, and that means a lot!

Walking around the Los Cabos Marina, he spoke with 7 locals who knew him by name!

And his Spanish is better than most,

Make it happen!

Somehow, until now, I missed this wonderful report.  I see some old school reels in use.  That's great.  And with the way the Tank made short work of the 150 lb marlin, who needs anything else?  Also, glad I could help you out with your 349.

Wow! Dom!,
I didn't see the marlin you caught earlier. Very Impressive. You are still the Man! I can't wait to get my Tank built. What kind of line do you have on that beast? Any backing?

Sharkey  I thought I answered this.  Was this question posed somewhere else?  I have 80lb Jerry Brown braid over 80lb mono (just for backing) and a top shot of 100 lb Momoi leader.  They are connected Bimini to Bimini.  Dominick

That looked to be a great trip!

I love me some cerviche and every time we head out on my friends boat at 75 miles or more, I bring all the ingredients to make a few batches and the crew loves it. Used two snappers and a grouper last trip a few weeks ago and had to give up my recipe afterwards. lol!

I would love to catch a Rooster Fish. We are headed out 130 miles on August 17th for two days and hope to snag a Marlin. Though we are still in the learning stage of that fish.

Firepro911:  There are 2 things, I have to say.  1. There is a thread to post recipes.  2. Fly down to Cabo.  You have a better chance for a marlin.  Dominick

I thought I would revive an old thread from June 2013.  The man in the photo below was named Valentino.  Valentino probably shows up in the photos of the cutting tables since he was one of the major fish cutters at Puerto Los Cabos.  I found out on the trip down there last week that Valentino died last month.  I have known him for years and he was very popular with the locals and fisherman.  He was at the cutting tables when he collapsed and died.  I guess the only good thing that can be said about that is that he was doing what he enjoyed and did not see it coming.  Rest in Peace my Amigo I will miss you.  Dominick

Second day of fishing, Dom getting the locals to "loose a few buttons!"
