We had a local guy on the boat yesterday that had a Newell 641-3 that looked great on the outside except for a crack in the handle nut. I listened to the reel as I turned the crank and it sounded ok but the drag was really jerky. The guy's wife bought it at a yard sale for $10. I offered him $100 which is a huge profit but no deal. I offered to rebuild the drags and clean it for him and he would have a lifetime reel if he would just wash it after use.
When I opened it up I was quite surprised at what I saw. Three and half hours later it was clean as new and ready for many years of fish killing duty.

I was lucky and had one of the large Cir Clips for the jack lever, the bearings were in good shape and free spool is really good, I installed CFs with Cals drag grease and it is very smooth operating now. Also installed a new handle nut and one of Keta Lee's 3-318 drag washers.

good save!

Thanks for the picture help. Can you get that after picture to post that shows the cleaned up parts? I don't have the photobucket mastered yet. Our instruction don't match what I see when I upload a picture.

You can do a lot with carburetor cleaner and steel wool. The owner just picked it up and is happy as a kid at Christmas. He is ready for serious grouper fishing now.
I also lubricated all the screw threads and lightly lubed the underside of the SS rings so this one should last for a very long time with a good wash after use.
