Title: line guide
Post by: Jerseymic on June 28, 2013, 02:25:07 PM
Hi Guys,

Picked up a nice 100 Surfmaster recently for my collection, which has a line guide that fits on one of the posts with a spring.

Took everything apart for a good clean, come to refit the line guide and for the life of me just can't seem to get it right.

Could one of you guys kindly help me, before I go crazy!!

Mike.

Hi Alan, thanks for the reply.

It is not a level wind assembly as such, it is that strange wire line guide that fits on one of the posts with a spring, I have seen pictures  them occasionally on some older Penn conventionals.

After playing around with it I have now got it fitted okay.

Hi Guys,

Thanks for posting the photo Lee.

Like I said I have seen them a couple of times before on some old Penn conventionals on our eBay.

Don't know if they are produced by Penn or someone else.

Bucktail, the reel is a righty, wish it was a lefty, it would be a bit more unusual!

Any more info on what appears to be something out of the ordinary, would be much appreciated.

Mike.

That is neat. (doesn't seem to be working very well in the picture though :)  )

Sure that isn't a form of cast control, though?

Hi Robert,

That is interesting, I just assumed it was some kind of line guide.

There will be no fish for this one, the line is off, been stripped and cleaned, and is now sitting on a shelf to be admired!!

There is just something about these old Penn reels!

This is the "Dons Anti Backlash Device" made in England by Dons of Edmington (London) for use on Penn Surfmasters.
It was fitted to one cross bar modified by having a small locating hole drilled to locate the spring end.
Tension was then applied by rotating the crossbar and locking with the two cross bar securing screws.
They were fitted to Mitchell reels too and apparently were quite popular with surfcasters in the UK and US.

Now I need to have one...not that it makes sense to me, but still need to have one ;D.

Way to go Rob, great idea on the tension spring on that spool. ;)

The spring only puts minimal tension on the spool. If I want line on tight, as in spectra, I use a nylon washer sandwiched between a fender washer and no spring on each side of the line spool. (Dominick's idea I think. ;)) Both the spring and washer methods need a locknut to keep the single nut from loosening or tightening.

The second set of hose clamps is for a second reel to transfer line from one reel to another.

This is really cool. Both the cast control and the line winder. Rob do you fit the reel handle up with a power drill to wind the line on?

Nope. Just an armstrong rotor system. ;D  It gives me more control.

Rob, I really like it. I may borrow some your idea on this. Not to hijack this thread, but how do you hold the reel to the PVC?

Mike, your value just went down by 50%, I also got one ;) ;D
Tom (Irish Jigger) was kind enough to send me the Anti Backlash Device, he actually send one to Lee (Keta) also.
Thanks again Tom. Although I appreciate it, you need to stop sending me stuff ;D, shipping cost is crazy.
Lee's doesn't have the spring on his, I figured he could make his own better than I could ;D.
Here are a couple of shots:

Mine is on a Squidder 150. Dominick, do you recognize the reel? ;D Thanks again buddy.

Lee, you wanted to see a picture of the spring, here you go:
(http://i1318.photobucket.com/albums/t646/pescatore2/009_zps89752858.jpg) (http://s1318.photobucket.com/user/pescatore2/media/009_zps89752858.jpg.html)
When the Device kicks back, the leather stopper rides the side of the spool creating friction.
Very simple but effective design.

O wow, I only see this now, there were similar contraptions available in South Africa a few years back to fit a jigmaster, they worked well but it limits distance dramatically. I can imagine that you will need one casting one of those brass/steel spooled reels, they are overwind machines of note.
