Title: newell 500/112h gears
Post by: jigmaster501 on July 24, 2013, 10:24:49 AM
I have a new set of newell 4:1 gears that I want to use on a 112h that I am doubledogging with the 5+1 drag stack.

My pinion gear doesn't engage on the spool but when I try it on other spools, it fits.

I have a new Penn 4:1 pinion that fits but I would rather use the newell one as the ring is heavier. I noticed that the tolerance for the cut on the newell pinion is cut much tighter than the penn.

I tried polishing the pinion and the spool spindle but to no avail.

Any suggestions?

Remove the ring and file the side wall of the pinion at the notched area on both sides. You won't need much, use a fine file with little pressure, try a couple of strokes on both sides and keep testing as you go. Press the ring back when you're done.

I did that and it worked perfect. I used a file for the gear and the sleeve needed to be thinned on the sides so I used a dremel tool for that.

I made a 3/0 mini tank with double dogs, stainless sleeve, stainless gears and 5+1 carbon fiber drags.

I did a 4/0 the same way.

It makes the reels seem like altogether different reels.

I will be testing them for cod on sunday weather permitting.

Thanks for the help.
