Title: Newell 229-5
Post by: fliflicker on August 01, 2013, 01:40:30 AM
Hey folks, I'm new here... glad to find you!
I recent acquired a Newell 229-5. I really like the reel but it will only mount on round reel seats or rods... Is there a kit or mod that can enable the reel to be mounted to a flat reel seat (like shamano)?

Are you trying to mount it on a freshwater rod? Is your reel base all graphite or is it graphite with a molded in stainless piece?

No, a saltwater rod. I believe the base is molded. It has a screw on clamp to hold the reel from underneath. The tangs that would normally slip into a modern reel seat are to short and thick to fit into the slots. I managed to find a rod (Phenix) that had a rounded reel seat and it fits fine but it was not my first choice.

You can always change the Newell Reel Seat to a Penn Reel Seat. I have converted a few over the years. Not that much difference in weight & NO reel Clamp to bug you.
