Title: Soldering level wind?
Post by: aaronb on August 21, 2013, 03:29:31 PM
I'm rebuilding an Ambassadeur 1500c and 2500c.  I'm thinking about pulling apart the worm drive, so I can add 2 bearings on each reels level wind.  I'm just curious what kind of solder to use to reattach the gear to the worm drive.  Also how hard of job would it be.  Thanks.

i believe that is should be peened.  the worm is soft enough that a center punch and a single whack should do the job...... :-\

Thanks.  I wasn't sure.  I saw somewhere online suggest solder.  The gear looks like aluminum and I think the worm is brass.  These are my first ambassadeurs to tinker with.  What should I hold the worm with, so I don't mess it up when I am reattaching the gear.  Should I just use a ball peen hammer or a punch?

Hammer AND a punch, lightly stake the shaft.  A bit of epoxy might help.
