Take it apart and make sure you have a steel main gear.

ok it's not.how to get one ???

Unfortunately, it's by luck to find one.  There were even fewer steel gears for the 309s.

If it is for the kids, the brass gear should be fine. I would swap in HT-100 drags if they are nat already there, lube it up and fish the pee out of it.

The 309 uses the 500 main gear. You can often find a steel one on ebay. If you really want to Hot Rod it I would put a steel gear in with Bryan's 5+1 drags. Find a Newell base for a 112H, 99 etc., install a steel gear sleeve, ditch the level wind, figure out how to double dog it and get an aluminum spool. Then fish it like an albacore special because that's what you would have.

Lately I've learned from my personal tests that the tip of the pinion goes before the main gear :-\. This happens at around 27lbs.
Bryans kit will bring you there, just be smart on the line you use and you should be ok.
By the way, I'm going to recommend the Surfmaster 100. You could put some magnets on the plate and watch the kids have some fun ;)
I love these little reels. Now I can say that, no need to compete on ebay anymore, I have plenty ;D

Sal,
I also love the little reels. I really like my 180 because the swappable spool thing makes me uncomfortable. But he already has a 309 and the 309 has perfect all mono capacity. That seems nice to me if you are trying to keep it simple.

Title: Re: HOT ROD 309
Post by: Alto Mare on August 28, 2013, 12:34:57 AM
Yes! The 30-500 is shared by many reels, about a dozen of them.

Sorry...the 30-200, not 30-500.

If you are asking
"does the 505 or 500 base fit the 309?"
the answer is no.  The 309 uses the narrower 30-66 base.

oops, thanks for catching that George, I thought Jamie meant if the 505 would fit a 500.

Will the 99 size stand fit
Title: Re: HOT ROD 309

Yes, the 99,112h will both fit.
Ron
Title: Re: HOT ROD 309
Post by: Alto Mare on August 28, 2013, 09:56:22 AM
No Ron, the 99 will not work. The width is the same, but the 99 comes with (3) holes for the stand. It wouldn't have been a problem if the outer two holes line up, but they don't.
Jamie, I have a few 30-66 they're the older type, I believe some called them skeleton stand.
If you need me to send you one, I'll be happy to do so, but you won't be able to attach the rod clamp.
Title: Re: HOT ROD 309
Post by: George4741 on August 28, 2013, 02:59:38 PM
Broschro,
If you want to stiffen the frame a little bit, then use a Newell RB-2 reelfoot.  Since the reel is only held together with 3 posts and a reelfoot, this is about all you can do to make it more rigid.
 George

BTW if you install a Newell foot, then replace those short screws with some longer ones.

Hi Sal, I think those so called skeleton stands are 30-65 LB stands, as they are the same width as a 30-66.   Rudy

Huh,
Their is a Newell stand on ebay right now that says 112H / 99. I've seen other references also, but Scotts does indeed say I'm an idiot.

Rudy, you're a walking encyclopedia ;D, I got my magnifying glass and it does say 30-65, very hard to tell on some though, it looks more like 66 than 65. That said, they will still work.

Don't be too upset about that 99, it's a good item to have. Those are close to impossible to find ;)

Here is a link to a photo of an ACTUAL 99 stand.  Same width as a 30-66 but with 6 screw holes.

Irish Jigger did some nice and unusual work on this reel.

Title: Re: HOT ROD 309
Post by: Alto Mare on August 30, 2013, 02:37:46 PM
It appears things are getting confusing :-\, well to me anyway.
the 30-49 will fit a Senator 1/0 , 501, 506,100 146,259 and 49.
The 30-99 will fit the International 6 (if anyone has one let me know how much ;D), 12H and Silverbeach 99.
You can increase the ratio on the Silverbeach by replacing the right side plate with a Jigmaster 500 plate.
Hope this clears it a bit.
Sal

It doesn't the 250 uses a 30-200 stand.

John informed me that the 30-99 doesn't fit the international 6, but it does fit the international 12H.
That said I'm still looking for that 6, but it needs to be in excellent shape with box.

Ok I just re read the listing, it says jigmaster 99 size. what dose this mean ???
Title: Re: HOT ROD 309
Post by: Ron Jones on August 30, 2013, 07:06:12 PM
It means that the seller doesn't know his Penns exceptionally well.

The Penn 99 Silverbeach and the Penn 500 Jigmaster have the same diameter, the right side of the spool is the same and the sideplate bolt holes are the same. This means that you can bolt a 500 Jigmaster right side plate to a 99 SIlverbeach and have intermidiate capacity reel that has a higher gear ratio and better drags. This is called an Albacore Special.

Newell made parts to beef up a 99 with whatever sideplate was mounted on it. You have bought one of those frames. You will need a 500 Jigmaster and a 99 sized spool from Penn, Newell, Tiburon and I think one or two other people to put together an awesome reel. Trying to get a set of Newell 99 posts would be cool too.

What's going on is I tols Jamie that the 99 Newell stand would fit his 309, so he went and bought it. Then Sal told me I'm an idiot and just caused Jamie to waste his money, can't tell you how sorry I am about that, Jamie.
