Title: Trio High Speed gear shaft play?
Post by: amoebasurgeon on September 19, 2013, 02:29:50 PM
Hi everyone,
Just got a new Okuma Trio-30S from ebay. I don't have anything to compare it to but so far, I like it. The only problem is that with the handle secured, when I toggle or shake the handle/handle cap I feel a little bit of play. What's causing this and how do I fix it?

likely that is normal.  find a new reel (if possible) to compare it to.   :-\

I have owned several Okuma spinners, some with play, some without. It is problably to be expected from reels in this price range to have some variability in the tolerances. Depending on where the play is, sometimes you can improve things by adding shims between the sideplate and main gear. Have a look at this thread: http://alantani.com/index.php?topic=778.0
If the play is due to loose tolerance between the main shaft bearings and the side plates (are the main shaft/gear bearings loose in their 'sockets'?), then maybe some thin aluminium tape can be used to tighten things up a bit. Be ware of corrosion problems, I would personally only try this on graphite side plates.
