Title: Calcutta 400A anti-reverse problem
Post by: q3fishboy on September 20, 2013, 02:21:02 AM
I have an old Calcutta 400A that has been getting a lot of use/abuse lately. It started having a few minor issues so I took it apart to clean it.  After reassembling everything, I now have the following issue with the anti-reverse mechanism and would greatly appreciate any advice/suggestions you guys might have.

With the reel in gear etc., the handle still rotates backwards freely when I pull the line out.  If I hold the handle in order to prevent this, The drag seems to function normally except I feel a hiccup regularly spaces about once every foot of line that I pull out.

Thanks a bunch.

The first thought is that the anti-reverse bearing is no good, and are cheap to replace. Can be had at most Shimano stockists or from http://fishshop.shimano.com

You need to open up the handle side and have a look at the bearing. These are really bullet proof reels, and easy to work on. Many good articles on them but look at http://alantani.com/index.php?topic=2430.0

Definitely, AR bearing issue. Very important to change the sleeve and the bearing together. Also, check to see the condition of the AR ratchet

Thank you for the replies.

As I thought, it was not the anti-reverse bearing. The bearing and sleeve alone held fine and the issue turned out to be that I failed to line up the drag washer ears with the main gear.

As long as the problem is fixed, a working reel is a good reel.
